Education, a life-altering event that involves the development of being more open- minded. When one’s horizons expand they begin to have a shift of perception. The process of becoming knowledgeable through education can differ from the individual or situation. It can also have one acquire gratitude for their change of insight. Two passages, “Learning to Read” by Malcom X and “The Allegory of the Cave” by Plato, each contain an individual who goes through the path of gaining wisdom. Although both excerpts contain similarities involving one’s experience resulting in the enlightenment of education, there are several differences in how the acknowledgement occurs and the type of predicament the individual is in.
In his article, The Owl Has Flown, author Sven Birkerts suggests that knowledge has lost nearly all of its depth and reading has shifted from vertical to horizontal. The author supports this suggestion by providing the example of Menocchio, a 16th century man who nearly memorized the few books that he owned. He argues that the generations before the 17th century did not have access to the vast number of books that those of the future generations do. This allowed people of the past to take more time to analyze and make inferences about books. With the exponential growth in the number of available books and limited time to read them, Birkerts believes that the newer generations have neglected wisdom altogether. He
In Anthem by Ayn Rand, there are many uses of symbolism throughout the entire novel. Specifically, the quote (found on page 52) “The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see, but for those who will seek them.” is a great example of this. Equality 7-2521, a street curious street sweeper discovers a new way to create light and control electricity while working underground late at night. Equality then returns several times, experimenting and improving this newfound power. This quote, is in direct correlation with this part of the story, as
Although the profit margins of Pontiac Plant is low with several issues coming up everyday, it is absolutely critical for Pontiac, at this point of time, to maintain good relationship with the workers and maintain a good reputation with the United Automobile Workers of America. Investing in in plant tooling and attempting to develop a viable operation requires negligible capital investment and in turn promotes a ray of hope and communal harmony amongst the workers of the plant. Furthermore, this alternative directly addresses to the major problem of Pontiac plant i.e. all the machineries are antiqued , the overhead costs are high and the workforce does not have the zeal , enthusiasm or the motivation to work hard for the company. Considering the present challenges that Allen is facing today with respect to the Pontiac plant , this is perhaps the only solution with a minimum investment that can not only increase the communal harmony in the workplace but also increase sales of the plant which would eventually stabilize the Pontiac plant for few years. This decision by Allen would indeed boost the morale of the employees and in turn help the revival of Pontiac plant which is old and
There has been a multitude of famous individuals that have changed the course of human history over the years. With their work being the source of inspiration of many to simply having a likeable, repeatable demeanor, there is no doubt that to be regarded in that special collective of individuals. One of the most famous civil rights leader that advocated for 13 years, Martin Luther King Jr., discertation called, “The Purpose of Education,” that brings awareness to the importance of education and its overall relevance in tepid year of 1947. Dr. King brings clarity to his opinion in the beginning of his paragraph stating, “It seems to me that education has a two-fold function to perform in the life of man and in society: the one is utility and
Knowledge has the capability to be used for both good and evil. In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, there is a consistent message throughout the novel showing the dangerous and destructive power that knowledge can have. Two key characters, Victor Frankenstein and his monster, are shaped through their obsessions with knowledge and the power and responsibility that it brings. Ultimately, Victor’s downfall is a result of his uncontrollable thirst for knowledge, and is brought about through the monster which is the embodiment of his obsession.
Moreover, C being the least price sensitive, it would be the most willing segment to pay the premium for the superior product performance. At the beginning of the simulation, Minnesota Micromotors’s market share for this segment was just 4% - there was a huge potential for growth. Moreover, Segment C consistently had the highest gross margin per unit ($58.36 for 2012 Q3) which indicated that Segment C could be the most profit generating customers for Minnesota Micromotors.
In his book “The Republic”, Plato argues vis-à-vis Socrates that the philosopher is, in fact, the happiest person. He draws this conclusion when he compares it against that of a money-lover and an honour-lover. This paper will expound on the argument put forth by Socrates and in doing so will provide the reasons for my support of his argument.
1. Knowledge and learning is vital to the survival of the human race. Without man’s need to educate himself we probably would not have made it past the caveman days. For today’s society, we must learn how our government works and how to thrive within it in order to have a successful future. To understand our government we must learn its history, understand our military prowess as well as the rest of the worlds. Most importantly we must educate today’s youth, as they are the key to America’s future.
Without a doubt, I feel that my response to a difficult challenge is reflective of what Peter Van Doren was looking for in scholars to award his scholarship. The way I handled adverse conditions speaks for itself. Rather than choosing to quit on my education and athletic career when things got difficult, I chose to formulate a plan for success with a clear goal. Van Doren wanted to reward people who are willing to make a strong effort in order to pursue their education. The amount of effort and sacrifice made in order to be a successful student in high school and eventually college displays my extraordinary value for the pursuit of knowledge. I’ve always had a deep admiration for learning because learning is the only path to growth. While education certainly does not stop in the classroom, it is certainly a key place to expand one’s comprehension of a variety of skills and topics. Being in a learning environment like a classroom not only exposes one to a seasoned instructor that can impart knowledge on you but a surplus of different classmates with different upbrings and ideology that expands perception on an idea in a way that gives new light on a concept one may have never seen before.

In my junior year of high school my English teacher, Dawn Dayhoff, assigned a project in which we were to write a six-word long memoir. My memoir was this: “Your decision: Accuse, Excuse, or Choose.” I have made it a point in my life to be someone that is a “chooser.” The idea behind someone that is a chooser is that they take ownership over their life, in their words and their actions. To me, this is the definition of someone with the Strength Finder 2.0 theme of Responsibility: one that owns his or her actions (and words), follows through to completion, and is an all around dependable person (Rath, 2007, p.149). Additionally, an important part
