Maruti Suzuki is the leading passenger car manufacturer in India. It was established in 1981 as a joint venture between the Government of India and Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), Japan. The company is one of the most well-known brand in India. It currently produces 14 brands of cars in all categories (Hatchback, SUV, Sedan and MinVans). The classification of the cars ranges from low end models (starting from INR 0.3 million) targeted towards growing Indian middle class to premium models (starting from INR 1 million) targeted towards the rising corporate segment of the population. In 2015-2016, the company launched 3 new models, all of which were successful. The Company has manufacturing facilities at Gurgaon and Manesar with an installed capacity of 1.5 million vehicles per year. A new plant in Hansalpur, Gujarat, which will manufacture and supply cars to the Company under a contract manufacturing agreement, is expected to begin production in 2017 with an annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles in the first phase. Eventually, the project will have a capacity of 1.5 million vehicles, depending on market conditions. At the end of FY 2016, the company had an employee strength of 13,259 people. The company limited the attrition rate to 2.9% while adding around 961 people this year. The company has been listed as the number one in J.D.Power Customer Index satisfaction study for 16 years in a row.
