PREVENTING SEXUAL VIOLENCE 2
Introduction
Each year, there is an estimated 293,000 victims that fall prey to sexual assault (RAINN). Sexual violence is a public health problem linked to negative health behaviors such as alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and sexual promiscuity. As well as causing physical injury, sexual assault has a profound impact on the victim’s physical health, mental health, and social well-being. Sexual abuse disrupts a child’s social and cognitive development skills and increases

(Hickman) Adolescents can reduce sexual violence by focusing their time and efforts into hobbies that reflect their talents and interest. Community theatre could prevent the emergence of developmental problems and facilitate positive attitudes, which would enhance youth’s social and relationship skills through prosocial actions. (seeEccles&Gootman,2002) After school curriculum partnered with community services specializing in violence-related work can prove itself useful in educating teens on sexual violence. In a study of adolescent participation in the performing arts, there was a strong correlation in issues of risk and empowerment when teens were involved in community theatre (Daykin) The community arts challenged isolation and categorizing by empowering this group into forms of self and community representations. The program I propose could incorporate different elements of art with the performing arts as primary focus. Public performance is a pivotal aspect of drama therapy and is evidence that dramatization elements enhance therapeutic results. Past studies involving drama facilitators partnering with junior high and high school students in creating skits on topics related to relationship violence obtained positive findings. (Fong). The performing arts is a bridge that connects current events with ideas that demand community perspective. A key method in …show more content…
This will encourage supporters, volunteers, group leaders, and attract additional funding. Participants in the after school program and those wishing to get involved with the performance workshops will be taught improvisation skills. Improvisation relies on individuals intensely communicating with each other in real time, relying on a few, very specific rules. (Monks). The vision for this preventative method is to work from inside the school and filter out into the general public. In addition to creating skits and scenes pertaining to sexual violence there will be focus groups on how to be an active bystander. Special workshops create attitude change that fosters a bystander’s sense of accountability and competence for intervening, as well as an appropriate understanding of sexual violence to facilitate recognizing situations where intervention may be necessary (Baynard). The performing arts is an expressive art form capable of changing the way we see things. We can make a difference with our words, with our actions, and with our song. It only takes one person to set a ripple effect. Mahatma Gandi once said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Today is the day we take those words into
But to directly tackle the issue of stopping sexual assault, schools have implemented online programs that educate students about the details and facts of the crime. These programs seem like a good idea since they are easily accessible, comply with state and federal requirements, and require time for students to partake in them. In a broad sense, these programs do a good job spreading awareness of the issue at hand. However, the programs fail to help enact the drastic change that many schools hope the programs would. These programs are unsuccessful due to the fact that they are taught through a computer screen; users never truly interact with the actual experiences and emotions that one goes through during sexual assault.
Gandhi once said to be the change you want to see happening in our world. This quote means be a leader, and be the person who changes the lives of others in the world for the better. Moreover, you should stand up for what you believe in to help change the world, and to keep trying your best to fight for what is right. There were many positive leaders in the world who helped change our society for the better. For example, Alexander Hamilton, the first secretary of treasurer was one of these fine people.
In an effort to help victims of sexual assault, sexting, cyber stalking, and domestic violence the City of Huntsville has evaluated and identified a way to close the gap in the area in youth and adult assault experience. The City of Huntsville has developed a victim service organization that support teenagers and young adults who have either been victim of sexual assault, sexting, cyber stalking, and domestic violence. The City of Huntsville will work to coordinate efforts amongst the high school, universities, and law enforcement agencies and the community to close the gap in teenagers and young adults sexual assault. Partners who will be involved are Survivors Overcoming Abusive Relationship (SOAR) and HOPE Place.
Of the 22.3 million children between the age of 12 and 17 in this country, at some time in their life about 1.8 million have been the victim of a serious sexual assault, 3.9 million have been the victim of a serious physical assault, and almost 9 million have witnessed serious violence (Helen, Connelly,
Moreover, the ruling serves as a testament to the notion that even individuals of a young age who engage in severe criminal behavior can be subjected to legal consequences, highlighting the significance of assisting both the victims and the justice system (Kosloski et al., 2018). This statement serves as a poignant reminder that all manifestations of sexual assault are deemed unacceptable and necessitates an earnest response. The Possible
This chapter discusses how sexual battery is defined, how those crimes are punished, how sexual crimes are measured, theories of why people commit these types of crimes, what happens after a sexual assault, and how the law treats these crimes and their victims. The crimes covered in the documentary fall under the category of sexual battery, also known as rape, sexual assault, sexual violence, and deviant sexual conduct (Doerner, 2021). The current FBI definition of rape is “penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim,” (Rape,
On the contrary there could be other solutions to aide would be victims of sexual assault, which could be to have a self-defense class offered or to use other non-lethal ways of defending one’s
In society and college campuses, sexual assault occurs quite frequently. According to an estimation one third of women experience a forced sexual experience at least once in their life and most of the time it occurs in colleges. Men have also been reported to be victim of sexual assaults mostly by other men. Most of the time the sexual assault is planned and perpetrated by a third person, who is known to the victim of incident. Drug and alcohol use play role in this issue and contribute to the problem as most of the time the victim and perpetrators are under the effect of alcohol or any other drug during the incident.
Sexual violence can affect anyone. There is no end all be all strategy to avoid any and all sexual violence. However, studies have shown that some people are more likely to be affected by sexual violence than others. Typically, the people most likely to be at risk of sexual violence are people who are disenfranchised, in prison where a whole different cultural dynamic exists and people who can’t care for themselves. Just a few of these groups are Native American women, male prisoners, and children.
As sweat pooled down her face and a low guttural grunt escaped her mouth, DePaul University student Natalie Marcrum gave one final thrust of her knee to the imaginary predator. Learning to defend herself, as well as others Marcrum works to prevent sexual assault before it happens. In support of April’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Office of Health Promotion and Wellness at DePaul University has partnered with various departments and student lead organizations to bring forth information in coping, recognizing and preventing sexual violence. “It’s important for colleges to be involved because sexual assault is most prevalent on college campuses,” said Ava Bibergal, a DePaul University student.
The youth then try to emulate the behaviors that they see presented to them. The only problem with this is that plays and shows that are malignant in nature can become the moral foundations of their lives. The theatre also causes crime among the youth. Young boys commit theft in order to get tickets to the theatre so that they do not miss the show. It also causes the youth to be absent from everyday life; they develop a complex that can be thought of as the lights are on but nobody is home.
Predictors of Sexual Assault While In College Sexual assault on campus is an important public health concern and public safety concern which has been becoming an important topic on colleges and universities across the country. According to a special report conducted by U.S. Department of Justice (2014), the Rape and Sexual Assault Victimization Among College-Age Females, 1995-2013 (U.S. Department of Justice 2014) found that 20% of student victims reported a rape or sexual assault to the police during their time in college. Due to stigma of sexual assault and fear of retaliation we know that significant percentage of individuals never report their sexual assault, and other analyses have victimization reports ranging from 35% to a high of 56%
However, from the late 1970s through 2008, rape and sexual assault rates, as measured by the National Crime Victimization Survey, steadily declined (Mears, 2010, p. 82). This survey, however, does not consider all crimes that are considered sexual crimes. There is no existing data on all the various crimes that could be considered sexual crimes. Over the past 30 years, according to a new
Sexual assault is a basic violation of human rights involving perpetrators that still typically get their allotted sentence reduced with next to no punishment. As a result, victims are discouraged from reporting their assault. Out of every sexual assault charge, only six in every one-thousand rapist will be successfully prosecuted. One out of every six American women have been victims of attempted or completed rape in their lifetime with 14.8 percent completed, and 2.8 percent attempted. About three percent of American men, or one in thirty-three have experienced an attempted or completed rape at some point in their
According to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, another person endures sexual assault every 98 seconds. This information may have been shocking ten years ago, but for many, this news is a basic fact of life. Sexual assault cases have continued to become more and more common as time goes on. What is causing this surge in unwanted physical contact? The cause of sexual assault is one hundred percent of the time, the assaulter’s fault.
