2.1 INTRODUCTION TO HOTEL ECONOMICS AND SERVICES
The economics of a profitable hotel venture is a significant concept of which the architect should be extremely conscious and aware of during every phase of the planning stage. The cost to operate a hotel may not be known to an architect, but he should possess knowledge about every facet of hotel design and its functioning and develop the plans accordingly to achieve maximum profits through its operation. Some of these factors include the hours spent by hotel staff such as maids, porters, housekeepers, cooks, chefs, bellmen, receptionists, banquet manages, executive staff, etc. (Joseph De Chiara and Michael Crosbie, 2001)

A well-planned back of the house will have circulation patterns that will have the capacity to provide utmost control over the efficient functioning of the hotel. Probably a neglected yet an important aspect of the control area is the movement of garbage out of the hotel to a point where it will be picked up by garbage trucks, i.e.; waste management and disposal. A proficient and productive waste management system helps a great deal in achieving the level of cleanliness required in a five star hotel. Where garbage is shipped out, it is wise to have the garbage rooms so placed (and, incidentally, refrigerated) that the receiving office has this space in full view to discourage an outside accomplice or an employee who is leaving the hotel from entering the garbage room to filch what was placed there previously by someone in the kitchen or the supply areas. If there is no laundry room at all or only a small laundry which handles towels only, the hotels may avail the city laundry service. A good sized space for dryers, washers, ironers and other machineries if the hotel laundry does its own uniforms and flatworks (sheets, pillowcases, linens). A separate department for dry cleaning and pressing of woolens and similar garments is maintained by the hotel. They are under the supervision of the laundry manager. The location of such cleaning and valet services is generally close to or part of the laundry area. In some hotels, no iron linens are used which eliminates the need of large ironers. It may be that, in the not-too-distant future, experiments with disposable sheets, pillowcases, and uniforms will do away with laundry services in hotels. Presently, the disposable types that have been produced are still not of sufficient strength and durability for hotel use, although the future may produce exactly that. The 1870’s people had no supply of plumbing or showering, showering in the 1870’s was just a wash bucket to clean them for the month. Plumbing was not an option in the 1870’s as there wasn’t such a thing, although people managed to get a bath with a providence of a wheat bag to clean them with. However if they used a soap made out of coal to clean with but left their skin chapped. Cleaning their sheets would normally consist of using vinegar as a cheap alternative ‘her pillow smelt of chicken coop’ in spite of having no plumbing they used a ‘wee housie’ to substitute a toilet used in 1970’s the 1970’s plumbing was an option people had showers and a big water supply to have a daily wash, this water supply was provided to everyone but paid for monthly or weekly. In the 1970’s they had a nice way of washing their clothes and bed sheets called washing powder to clean their sheets and clothes, but leave them smelling nice.
Beginning in the late 19th Century, the Gilded Age was a historic period of time characterized by political corruption and angry sentiment towards government. As citizens of the United States became increasingly discontent about the current state of the nation, they started to express this anger in the form of reform movements. Leading up to the Progressive Era movements were various social, economic, and political concerns that revolved around political leaders failing to meet the needs of people. The rise of the Progressive Reform movements in the years 1870-1917 was largely influenced by conflict in the working class, governmental influence of big business, and the absence of civil rights for many American citizens.

More education should inform more people globally to understand to ongoing issues with the garment industry to evoke global change. Consumers should be informed as to why prices of apparel should not be at the inexpensive cost that it is now, because of the underlying reasons of how the company gets the clothing to that price. Inexpensive, fast fashion from stores like H&M, Forever 21, and Joe Fresh may seem most budget friendly but are not environmentally or sustainable globally. The demand for fast fashion should be brought to political action to help make a global change for the endangered workers of the garment industry. The observation has been conducted on Tuesday 18th of October, from 4:30 pm to approximately 7:30, while being at the hairdresser. After few minutes of observation, it could be noticed that there were a great number of employees (seven) - composed of two men and five women - for few clients (four). The objective of this observation was then to analyze how the tasks will be divided among the nine of them and what was everyone’s role in the saloon. Based on experience, in France, one hairdresser is in charge of one client and the “intern” washes your hear. By contrast, it was surprising to have the nine of them surrounding me, with up to four hairdressers taking care of my hair at the same time.
