As his paintings grew popular so did his inventions. In the short story “The Turtle,” the author John Steinbeck claims that life always throws different obstacles in the reader's way. Steinbeck supports his claim by using the turtle’s journey as a metaphor for life. The author’s purpose is to show that even though life can be difficult, the reader must persevere. The author writes in a reflective tone for readers to reminisce on their struggles through life.

The Iroquois people are one of the earliest cultures in American history, Their culture remains filled with an abundance of myths and legends that explain the nature of life itself. Their creation story, The World On Turtle 's Back, outlines not only the creation of Earth, but also the complex nature of people. The legend states that the Earth resided on the back of a great sea turtle, constituted first by a pregnant woman. The daughter of whom would birth the twins who would become the duality of deceit and order in every living being. This legend has been passed down through the generations, first through oral tradition and later translated to writing. Native-American Literature Scholars, Larry Evers and Paul Pavlich believe that such stories "remind the people of who and what they are, why they are in this particular place, and how then should continue to live here." The story of the World on Turtle 's Back effectuates these qualities through the significant cultural traditions of the Iroquois tribe, as well as the ways that the culture views the world.
The Renaissance was the rebirth of Europe after it was terrorized by the plague, known as The Black Death. With this rebirth came a desire to redesign Europe into something better. People began studying the ‘Classics’, or ancient Rome and Greece. Science, math, and the arts were studied and funded in the hopes of rebuilding Europe’s culture and population. Many great artists spawned from this period of the Renaissance. Along with those artists came Leonardo da Vinci, the most significant Renaissance artist.

A lot of the characters wear warm colours such as red and yellow. Buggin Out is wearing a yellow shirt and Radio Raheem wears a mix of red, yellow and orange. This not only represents the heat but is symbolic of the rage that the characters have inside because we know that these two characters show a lot of anger and violence throughout the film. Another example of this is the bright red wall that is seen behind the three men sitting at the corner. The colour of the wall represents the anger and frustration the men are feeling as they sit around and complain. The colour blue is also used in the film as the opposite to red. Da mayor is wearing a blue suit and this shows that he is not full of rage like most of the others but instead he is a calm
