Case study: The Abilene Paradox Submitted by Akmal Gumuri 203566 Jaclyn Lau 700476 Summary & Critique This article is basically discussing the confusion surrounding the inability to manage agreement. The Abilene Paradox has caused some serious issues in many situations and organizations. In this article it discusses about the Watergate case that underlines perfectly the theory behind the Abilene Paradox. The Abilene Paradox fundamentally means a group of people agrees to a course of an action based on what the whole group agreed upon even though if it means making a bad decision. The paradox happens when individuals feel that their counter-argument is not strong enough to changing the minds of the other members of the group. Organizations who are stuck in this paradox will find themselves making the problem worse rather than fixing it. For example, a R&D worker would not want to report a problem that his/her boss would not want to hear, therefore the person would just make a fake report just to please his/her boss. This is also connected to the negative fantasies that some people have. There are scared of the unknown, for example not knowing what will happen to him/her if they acted differently that might jeopardize the team’s reputation. Furthermore, this article also touches on the different aspects of what might causes the paradox in different context and situations.
