Chapter 3 – The Second Secret
Overcome Your Fears
Many beginners find it hard to improve because they are afraid of being drowned. While this fear is understandable, you need to control it if you want to progress as a swimmer. You have to be comfortable every moment that you are underwater. This chapter will discuss some tips and simple exercises to help you overcome this fear. However, let us start our discussion by listing the main causes of this fear.
The Main Causes
1. This fear can be related to a frightening experience that happened during childhood.
2. It is sometimes caused by the instinctive fear of death (i.e. drowning).
3. It can be taught by swimming instructors who use stressful or ineffective teaching methods.
4. It may be related to the “fear of the unknown.” Many people do not want to swim

They further improved those skills by practicing continuously. However, these swimmers still become anxious if they have to swim in lakes or in the open seas, especially if they are not familiar with the area.
The main point here is that even expert swimmers can still experience some level of fear or anxiety. You should not lose hope since you can do things that can help you overcome this fear. Here are some of the exercises that you can perform.
The Water Exercises
We will now try to minimize your fear of water by performing some easy water exercises. If you want to feel comfortable while doing these drills, read these instructions carefully:
• These exercises can and must be performed in shallow water. Avoid doing these in deep waters since that is not needed. Look for places where the water is not higher than your neck. This way, you will feel more safe and comfortable.
• Perform these exercises in a swimming pool. Clean and clear water is advisable since you will be able to see what is (or what isn’t) beneath you. Swimming in cloudy or opaque water could worsen your
While first scared to enter the water, she became empowered and reckless, facing her fear, learning the excitement of swimming. By taking a risk and enjoying the outcome, Edna’s mindset started
I had the opportunity to observe Kentucky Aquatics, a local club team, that was under the coaching of Chris Fugmann. Chris started up a swim program and single handedly ran it for 26 years before combining swim teams with wildcat aquatics to become Kentucky aquatics. I selected this assignment because I want to pursue a swim coaching career and I would be able to apply concepts learned in KHP 547 in becoming a more effective coach. I had a positive experience when I completed the observation and I was able to apply it to the concepts learned in this course. Some of the concepts that I witnessed included operant conditioning, motivation tactics, and motivational climate.
I had had a fear of drowning since I was a little girl. My mom put me in swimming lessons but I would never want to go because I was always scared to do the things that the other children found easy. My fear was back from playing like
These number should make a person think twice about enrolling. One of the many dreadful drills you will encounter is the drown proof test. This test is one of the most feared drill of all the Military. In this drill someone’s partner will tie their hands behind their back and feet together.
However, what exactly is the fear of death? What causes it, and what does it cause? Also, is there a solution for it? To answer these questions, it’s important to know first
Ian enjoyed swimming but was no child prodigy at the time. Ironically, Ian was allergic to chlorine when he was young. He later started swimming with his head out of the water, which enabled his allergic reaction to subside overtime. Ian Thorpe did not swim in his first race until a school carnival at the age of seven. The allergy forced Thorpe, swam with his head out of the water; despite this awkward technique, he won the race, primarily because of his significant size advantage.
Nearly 19.2 million Americans suffer from different specific phobias such as Aquaphobia. Aquaphobia is a social phobia that is defined as the persistent, unwarranted and irrational fear of water. Aquaphibians conjure up images of dying in the water, drowning, gasping for breath, or encountering eerie, unseen things such as snakes or sharks in the water. In the short story “The Isabel Fish” by Julie Orringer, one of the main characters Maddy has gained this phobia of water due to her car accident in which there was a car crash and she ended up in the water. This car accident has changed a lot in Maddy’s life, but most importantly her perspective on water, and whenever she comes in contact with water, she is reminded of the car accident and
It is something we cannot stop. Many of us fear spiders or ghosts or even homework. But something all of us fear is the unknown. We have and we always will fear the unknown because we don’t know what the unknown is capable of. It is basic human nature.
My nerves from the first class unexpectedly came rushing back. These students grew into great swimmers, but I knew that the depth of the water could petrify them. The first few students were able to swim back up with little to no effort, but the last girl lost her footing and slipped into the pool and couldn 't resurface. I froze as I saw her struggling to swim and breathe. My mind quickly flashed back to the time I jumped out of my tube and almost drowned.
Ask swim lesson places if their instructors are water safety certified, lifeguard certified, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified. These certifications guarantee that the instructor meets Red Cross’s standards and can teach swimmers of all ages and abilities how to be more efficient in the water (Red Cross). All aquatic programs should include information on cognitive and motor limitations of infants and toddlers, the stradgendies of drowning, and the role of adults in supervising and monitoring the safety of children in and around the water and how to apply these things to being efficient in the water. Starfish Swim School of Georgia explains what these swim lessons
I turn my head up and take a breath.” That is how Jenna Ward (November 8, 2016) described the feeling of swimming. Everyone should be able to feel the thrill of accomplishing something so important as swimming. Swimming is a life saving skill all people should learn to do. I have a personal experience with the need to know how to swim.
I leapt from the diving board my rescue tube in hand, the air whooshing past my ears and adrenaline pumping through my veins. With a resounding splash, the swimming pool’s cool crisp water surrounded me. As I tore through the water, I looked up and saw the victim, a young woman in her twenties. A wide eyed, terrified expression was on her face as she sank underwater. I swam towards her body with all of my strength
This fear throws plenty of pressure and burden to people and therefore makes people mentally depressed. Such mental breakdown further influences people negatively in a physical way. Their physical health will go down day by day. And this is why some people say that we should fear death. They never realize that the all the pain comes from the fear of death.
Our spine is one of the delicate organ of nervous system, as it protects the central nervous system of human body, as well as the main support for the body to stay upright. It comprises of small bones placed one over the other which provides flexibility for movement. The upper part of spine is terminated in the skull. This region where the spine is attached to the skull is called the cervical region or neck. Pain in the neck or cervical pain is one of the diseases that are found very often in the entire world.
I had a fear of water since I was a child, but somehow managed to take a risk and dive. You know the feeling of being underwater? The bone-crushing pressure of gallons of water envelops every inch of your body and sinks into your lungs, your brain, your heart. While you remain remarkably void of feeling, the fullness of defeat dominates your mind until all that is left inside you are the remnants of the sea’s terrors. Underwater, there are no sounds from the outside world - no cries from those you have wronged, no professions of love hidden inside for too long, no vicious words flung ruthlessly at your feet from the glares of passing strangers.
