is too distracted by technology, so they ignore most of the world around them. The community members are not aware of nature or other human beings, and they never take time to actually
What could be so terrible about a book, that it has become one of the most frequently banned/challenged books? Of Mice and Men is a fictional book written by John Steinbeck in 1937. The book has been banned in many schools due to racism, profanity, foul language, violence, treatment of women, and for seemingly promoting euthanasia. This book is usually read by high school students around the age fourteen or fifteen, however many parents have gotten upset when hearing about what their kid was reading. Many parents have stated that this book is not age-appropriate and should not be read in school. However, in my opinion this book should not be banned.
This book should not be banned even though it portrays so many violent moments because it shows us the horrible reality of racial prejudice and discrimination. The Jews had to go through terrible things. For example, Elie “didn’t know that this was the moment in time
Is it ever just to ban a book over the inclusion of controversial material? In Cold Blood written by Truman Capote has been an example of a book put under scrutiny for containing controversial content. Although the reasons for the opposition are clear to see in the novel, the complaints toward the book are not substantial enough to ban the book from schools. Capote includes some amounts gore and strong language in the novel, however nothing mature students are not able handle. The novel is based on a murder that occurred in 1959, and it has been speculated that Capote sympathizes with one of the two killers. However this has been highly misinterpreted as Capote is empathizing and not sympathizing. In Cold Blood is a classic piece of American literature that deserves to be apart of the
Books are an essential way to gain knowledge whether they are controversial or not. Thousands of books have been banned from public libraries and schools due to being deemed ‘inappropriate’ by parents, administrators, or religious leaders. Whether Americans should ban books in public libraries and schools is an often debated topic. This censorship of books is dangerous, as it restricts the American people's’ ability to access information, leaving Americans ignorant.
Recently, several English teachers have decided to teach a certain book to their classes that contains questionable material normally not allowed in schools, including poor language, sexuality, and violence. They claim that the book has many redeeming qualities about it, and also is a great tool for teaching students reading and analytical skills. In my opinion, teachers should be permitted to teach these questionable book to their students. If an author's work was to be tampered with I feel as if many books will lose their value and or the meaning the author was trying to convey. Many of these “banned books” were written based on the time period it was wrote about.Banned books also can teach us history, social skills, vocabulary , and a new way of thinking. Many of these”banned books” are classics in history”.
The book sheds a tear as it is banned by administration for students to read. The Catcher in the Rye should not be banned for summer reading for incoming sophomores because of its “explicit” content. After high school, out in the real world, life experiences are not censored or banned to protect you. You must experience life and all that comes with it. Just because a book that was written many decades ago may have bad words in it, doesn’t mean that it should be withheld from the students. Additionally, the educational value of, The Catcher in the Rye would be totally lost if a book is banned just for containing “explicit” language.
Many books have been banned all around the world despite that people still think that books should not be banned because of the content inside even if the book has a good message. Books such as Harry Potter have been banned for it use of magic and witchcraft. But still others think that the lesson is more important. Banning books have pros and cons and can be seen either way. Some books are frequently banned in schools because they contain explicit content; however, some people argue that these very same books are worth reading because books were made to be read and teach us a lesson.
“Although Of Mice and Men is a literary classic, it is also a frequently banned book in many schools and libraries in the United States. This book has been either banned or challenged for over twenty years from a variety of different schools and libraries. I think Of Mice and Men should not be banned, but instead be taught in EVERY school, with responsible and mature teachers.” says jmonkey1080 at http://www.teenink.com/opinion/school_college/article/534583/Should-Of-Mice-and-Men-Be-Banned-Worldwide/ .This is how I belive people should react when they see the book “Of Mice And Men” by John SteinBeck If you harm others there are consequences that you have to face they might not be as bad as in the book. This teaches kids how to use proper language while speaking to others. The rest of this essay is about why, “Of Mice And Men” should not be banned from schools.
Every book has a point or a certain power that affects different kinds of readers everywhere, regardless of age or opinions. One book that affects teenagers and young adult readers was written by J.D Salinger. The Catcher in the rye has mesmerized the hearts of young adult readers across the country for its coming to age story about a young teen trying to find himself in this world. It 's overall message has sparked love from readers everywhere but the book has also sparked wild discussions about its content and if it should be taught in schools across the country. Although The Catcher In The Rye presents strong sexual themes and vulgar language, these aspects showcase the characters ' deepest emotions while staying true to the human experience and the power of language. The very same issues that cause the catcher in the rye to climb the banned book list, sexual themes and vulgar language, are exactly the things that make this piece worth teaching in high school curriculums, as they show readers the truest
What if your young child is looking through a book at your public library and comes across a topic that was way too mature for their mind set. Would you be okay with it? A big controversial issue that has been going on in the past year is if books should be banned. Now, no one is trying to banish libraries across the globe but people have requested to ban books that are inappropriate. This matter has grown to be worse because everyone has an opinion. In some cases books were banned from schools because parents believed there kids should not be opened to certain topic in the stories. Another issue is students have been sent home to read books for certain classes that talk about touchy subjects. For example, religion and magic. Parents
What does censorship mean? The term comes from the latin word censere, “to give as one’s opinion, to assess.” Applied to modern times, it is the oppression of ideas or information found as obscene, therefore restricted from an audience. The United States has asserted to stand for the liberty of its people, along with the promise to protect them. The protection includes censorship in books, movies, etc. The first book to be ever banned in the U.S. was in the 1600’s, and the banning of books has not stopped since then. A long list of banned books has built up, including J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye and John Knowles’ A Separate Peace.
Banned Books are books that are prohibited by law or to which free access is not permitted by other means. Banning books is against the writers right for freedom of speech, which is the first amendment. Students have the right to read, reading is not illegal, so why ban books? If a reader is mature enough to handle some curse words or bad behavior then they should be able to read banned books. Some people believe books should not be banned in schools/libraries but just because you do not like it does not mean it should be taken away, that is the authors freedom of speech. Also, some say that you should not be exposing bad behavior or language to students but in reality they hear and see these things everyday, and by banning a book, that is not protecting them.
Censorship is a serious matter that has been discussed through the years. People are divided on whether censorship should be in school libraries or if it should not. Books such as “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X" and many more have been greatly affected because of book banning. Not everyone has the same style, which causes outrage when certain books are banned. For example, if one book was banned and people prefered that book, it can make the community furious. However, I believe books should not be censored in school libraries.
