Salinas 2Holden to go through loneliness, but it causes him to act in an immoral fashion and have vulgarlanguage towards others.Even though the book wasn’t approved by many, J.D. Salinger (1919-2010) did become apowerful 20th century American writer because of The Catcher in the Rye’s fame. J.D. Salingeralso attended different schools, alike Holden, and after graduating he went to Europe to pursue acareer in writing. While at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania, J.D. Salinger met Professor WhitBurnett, who pushed him into creating more work. Although Salinger was starting of an amazingcareer in writing, he left to participate in World War II, like many other men in those times.Throughout war, Salinger still wrote a new novel: The Catcher in the …show more content…
Way before all of this, the real problem occurred in1960. An English teacher was fired, later reestablished, for assigning this book to a class. Thiswas just the beginning from 1961- 1982, The Catcher in the Rye developed into the furthermostchallenged/banned book in high schools and libraries. The irony in all of this is how The Catcherin the Rye, then, in 1981, was the most censored book and the second most shown book in publicschools. (R.W. Baldassarro)The question here is evident: why did so many teachers took the effort to risk their jobsjust to teach the students about a book? The key word here is “book”, for if its content hassomething to inspire and help the students succeed, it should be worth teaching. The Catcher inthe Rye, as many others would also agree, shouldn’t be challenged/ banned from schools for itrelates to “broadly anxieties about a conformist culture” and relates to the young audience.(Aubry, Timothy)“Partly because I have a lousy vocabulary and partly because I actquite young for my age sometimes. I was sixteen then, and I’m seventeennow, and sometimes I act like I’m about thirteen. It’s really ironical, because I’m six foot two and a half and I have gray hair. I really do. Theone side of my head- the right side- is full of millions of gray hairs. I’vehad them ever since I was a kid. And yet I still act sometimes like I wasonly about twelve.” (Salinger 9)Many teenagers are going through the same phase that Holden went through in this novel, some might not be as extreme but have some similarities, and can relate with Holden’stransition from childhood to adulthood. This can “help readers understand that
In his analysis of Catcher in the Rye’s ban history, Norbert Blei makes valid points about how preventing teenagers or young adults from reading the book makes no sense. When growing up, education wasn’t too important, so neither was reading. This was true until he found Catcher in the Rye, which lead him to other great classics. It had a positive effect on his life because he was allowed to read it, and as a teenager he could relate. He then goes on to explain how he believes that no one should have the power to decide when a person is prepared or too immature to read a book by censoring it.
For the Love of Books A quote from Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury says that “... books are to remind us what asses and fools we are.” Ironically, Fahrenheit 451, whose main theme was the harming effects of censorship, was banned from some schools for using the word “hell” and “damn” and for using God’s name in vain in 1953. But it is this kind of gall and truth that students are deprived of when books are banned from schools. Other banned books include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain for its racist language and themes, and Beloved by Toni Morrison for its sexual content, language, and discussion of bestiality. In every case though , rather than protecting the innocence of children and students, it denied them their first amendment right, their access to the lessons and themes of the world around them, and their tools to open their minds and expand their imaginations.
One popular book that has been challenged for banning is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This novel is about a runaway boy and his slave on their quest to the North for freedom. They face many obstacles and even though they never make it to the North, Jim is set free anyway. Although some people think that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should be banned in schools, it should not be banned because the novel is classic literature that people can easily get their hands on, it shows what life was like for African Americans while slavery was still permitted, and the book teaches valuable life lessons. There is no point in banning The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn because it can be easily acquired by kids since it is a classic novel.
This is both good and bad. There are some books that are unfit for children and high school students, however, this again can be abused. Certain books that have been pulled off school’s bookshelves include: A Catcher in the Rye written by Harper Lee, Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury and To Kill a Mockingbird written by J.D. Salinger. A Catcher in the Rye has been challenged by schools for many reasons not limited to but including: Anti-White, obscene, excessive vulgar language, sexual scenes, immoral issues (Banning).
Schools will at times ban certain books due to age restrictions, or will if it doesn't go with the school's intentions. This happens to popular author Stevin King with many of his books being banned from schools. As Mr.King describes” If you are not careful and diligent about defending the right of your children to read, there won't be much left, especially at the junior-high level where kids begin to develop a lively life of the mind, but books about heroic boys who come off the bench to hit home runs in the bottom of the ninth and shy girls with good personalities who finally get that big prom date with the boy of their dreams. Is this what you want for your kids, keeping in mind that controversy and surprise -- sometimes even shock -- are often the whetstones on which young minds are sharpened?” Because of how schools teach and the compulsory subjects you learn, having the opportunity to learn something on your own without the censorship of the school will help students in the long run.
but the book has also sparked wild discussions about its content and if it should be taught in schools across the country. Although The Catcher In The Rye presents strong sexual themes and vulgar language, these aspects showcase the characters ' deepest emotions while staying true to the human experience and the power of language. The very same issues that cause the catcher in the rye to climb the banned book list, sexual themes and vulgar language, are exactly the things that make this piece worth teaching in high school curriculums, as they show readers the truest
Novels are filled with lessons vital to a developing brain, due to their ability to teach caution and create experiences. In summation, the fallacious act of banning books from students and others willing to learn is utterly
JD started writing as a fifteen year old and published his first book at the age of 21. As a young man he had went to Valley Forge military school, wich he fictionalised in Catcher In The Rye under the name “Pencey Prep.” Salinger served in the military overseas between 1942 and 1946. Salinger was drafted into the infantry and was involved with the invasion of normandy. According to the biography (Salinger, JD 1919-)
Salinger is a wonderful novel with rich educational content and it should not be withheld from students because of what is deemed inappropriate and “explicit” language and content. Moreover, The Catcher in the Rye is an educational book that should be included in the sophomore English curriculum because out in the real world, life experiences are not censored or banned to protect you, sophomore students are at the age where they are old enough to know what is appropriate and what isn’t and they can read a book that has bad words in it, and if a book is banned for such a thing as bad language, the students are the ones being shorted because they are missing the educational value of the
This book should be taught to High School students across the country, and it should not be a banned book. To Kill a Mockingbird teaches students morals, and ethics. The book is still partially accurate to what some people go through even in today’s world, and what the books reads is still a part of history that should not be covered up and tucked away. To Kill a Mockingbird should still be taught in school systems, and should not be a banned book because the novel focuses on a part of history that should not be ignored.
Shatoni Madison February 3.2016 Writing Wednesday Recently, several English teachers have decided to teach a certain book to their classes that contains questionable material normally not allowed in schools, including poor language, sexuality, and violence. They claim that the book has many redeeming qualities about it, and also is a great tool for teaching students reading and analytical skills. In my opinion, teachers should be permitted to teach these questionable book to their students. If an author's work was to be tampered with I feel as if many books will lose their value and or the meaning the author was trying to convey.
According to CBSnews.com, ¨During the 2021-2022 school year, more than 1,600 books were banned from school libraries.¨ Looking at this number with no context might not seem like a lot, but each year more and more books go unread due to book censorship laws. After reading the novel, the Handmaid's tale, most high schoolers can attest while it may not be the most traditional book we have read in school, it should not be banned. There are several reasons as to why school systems should keep it in the curriculum. For starters it helps students learn and understand that no matter how crazy it may sound, we as a society cannot stear away from our morals because anything is possible.
Also, some say that you should not be exposing bad behavior or language to students but in reality they hear and see these things everyday, and by banning a book, that is not protecting them. Writers have the freedom to write whatever they want and that is a part of the First Amendment, so why banned their book? “The First Amendment allows individuals to speak, publish, read and view what they wish, worship (or not worship) as they wish, associate with
The Catcher in the Rye is a novel that was written by J. D. Salinger in 1951. It was first published by Little, Brown and Company and was originally written for adults, but became popular among teenagers for its teenage main character, who deals with problems a large number of adolescents face in their transition into adulthood. It is not a difficult book to read, especially considering it is only 234 pages. The story revolves around the protagonist, a 16 year old boy named Holden Caulfield, who recently flunked out of a prestigious preparatory school.
