3.1 Introduction This study is a comparative study on literary translation which aims at investigating the strategies in translation at semantics, sentence, stylistics and discourse level of the three Thai translated versions of The Catcher in the Rye. This chapter embodies materials, data collection, and data analysis and conceptual framework. 3.2 Materials 3.2.1 The original English version of The Catcher in the Rye, written by J.D. Salinger in 1951, was the source text. 3.2.2 The three Thai translated versions are including one from ชั่วชีวิตของผม (Chu Cheewit Khong Phom: All My Life) translated by Kumrawee-Baitoey in 1981, another from ทุ่งฝัน (Thung Fun: Dream Field) translated by Sassanik in 1988, and the last one from จะเป็นผู้คอยรับไว้…show more content…
2.2 Dialogue sentence The dialogue sentence is a conversation between characters in a novel. 3. Stylistics 3.1 Colloquial expressions Colloquial expressions refer to a word, phrase or other form used in informal language. Colloquial expressions are generally more appropriate for spoken conversations that are influenced by the way people speak in that society. In this study, the focus on colloquial expressions was categorized into four aspects: slang, interjection and swear word, word ending particle, and sex-related language. 3.2 Borrowed word and loan word The borrowed word here refers to a word from one language adapted for use in another without translation the word and is widely used in the target language. The loan word refers to a totally new word for the translation. This type of loan words is not part of the translation. In the beginning, the loan words maybe the odd because it is familiar. The comparative analysis of language expression of the three Thai translated versions was examined to the original version in order to consider that whether the translation can convey ideas, flavor and feel to equal the original. The researcher will examine how the translators modulate the source text to understandable Thai sentences and to convey the connotation apart from the meaning of linguistics form. By reason of the three Thai translated versions are different ages, the use of words and expressions, the comparison of the naturalness of the language, the language choices to fit the situation and era of the story were
