The era of New France marked a transition in which the Native Americans were not acquainted with, the contact with the Europeans. The civilization of the French was much different than the previous settlers. Rather than the French enslaving the Native Americans, they resided alongside them and even cultivated their language. This is deemed as striking because they did not expect or force cultural conversion from the Native Americans. Allan Greer captures these themes in his book, Mohawk Saint, in regards of the Mohawk Saint named Catherine Tekakwitha. Through Greer’s work, he is able to convince the relations between colonist and the Native Americans were not always as forceful as depicted; Catherine Tekakwitha is an exemplification to this theory. Greer makes it apparent that the lives of the French and Natives were interwoven and it unloads the cultures of both and how they interlaced with one another. The dual biography gives insight to the live of a Native and the lives of the French. Catherine’s biography exemplifies the struggles the Natives went through. “Death is a prominent theme in the history of the Jesuit mission to the Indians of New France,” this is why the Jesuits believed it was necessary from them to save the savages from their sins (6). Greer displays this through the examples of the priest baptizing the ill in secret in order for them to be saved. Not only did the French and Natives have an effect on life inside the church, but outside as well and Greer paints the picture effectively through the dual biography between Catherine and Claude. Theda Perdue`s Cherokee Women: Gender and Culture Change, 1700-1835, is a book that greatly depicts what life had been like for many Native Americans as they were under European Conquering. This book was published in 1998, Perdue was influenced by a Cherokee Stomp Dance in northeastern Oklahoma. She had admired the Cherokee society construction of gender which she used as the subject of this book. Though the title Cherokee Women infers that the book focuses on the lives of only Cherokee women, Perdue actually shines light upon the way women 's roles affected the Native cultures and Cherokee-American relations. In the book, there is a focus on the way that gender roles affected the way different tribes were run in the 1700 and 1800`s.
Finlay’s view is that the account of the story told by Davis is a fabrication and at odds with the firsthand accounts, primarily those of Jean de Coras. One of Finlay’s main criticisms is that Davis projects modern thinking on to peasants of 16th century France. For example, Bertrande is not simply a wife duped by an impostor, but instead, a conniving accomplice who desires a loving husband and personal autonomy. For Jean de Coras, Bertrande was depicted as a simple peasant wife, who was easily persuaded by her sisters to accept the imposter as her absent husband. Finlay states that this interpretation of the historical accounts, one that disregards motivations and character traits purported in the sources, is bad historical research and teeters more on the side of historical fiction than a work of history
Similarly to what Brown does for our understanding of gender and power in colonial Virginia, Daniel Richter attempts to do by calling for a new perspective of Native American history with regards to westward expansion. In Facing East from Indian Country, he acknowledges how the difficulties presented by a lack of historical sources and distances of time make it impossible to see the world through the eyes of Native Americans. The best historians can do is to “capture something of how the past might have looked if we could observe it from Indian country.” Richter calls for researchers to break with tradition and examine colonization looking from the west to the east. In doing so, the author forces Native Americans to the front, and views Europeans
The author goes on to debate what Pocahontas actually felt in her relationship with John Smith and how she most likely did not reciprocate the feelings he claimed she had. This may be new information to the reader and provides historical difference of the real Pocahontas from the Hollywood version while strengthening Townsend’s argument. Also, the author does not use challenging language in her own writing. She keeps her own wording basic as to give the readers a break from the difficultness of the old language. Another positive aspect of this book is the notes section and the preface.
The narrative offers an account which can be used to describe the particularly puritan society based on the ideals of Christianity and the European culture. It offers a female perspective of the Native Americans who showed no respect to the other religious groups. The narrator makes serious observation about her captors noting the cultural differences as well as expectations from one another in the society. However, prejudice is evident throughout the text which makes the narratives unreliable in their details besides being written after the event had already happened which means that the narrator had was free to alter the events to create an account that favored her. Nonetheless, the narrative remains factually and historically useful in providing the insights into the tactics used by the Native Americans

Not on remembered word of how generations upon generations lived and died” (83) The inadequacy of the European history books and Thom’s own lack of knowledge do not, of course, provide sufficient evidence for the conclusion that the world of the First nations has been lost.
Historians who practice historiography agree that the writings from the beginning of what is now known as the United States of America can be translated various ways. In James H. Merrell’s “The Indians’ New World,” the initial encounters and relationships between various Native American tribes and Europeans and their African American slaves are explained; based on Merrell’s argument that after the arrival of Europeans to North America in 1492, not only would the Europeans’ lives drastically change, but a new world would be created for the Native Americans’ as their communities and lifestyles slowly intertwined for better or worse. Examples of these changes include: “deadly bacteria, material riches, and [invading] alien people.” (Merrell 53)
Throughout the stories told in both Mohawk Saint and The Unredeemed Captive, the unintended consequences of converting the American Indians to Christianity and trying to bring a Protestant back from American Indian Catholicism were powerful players in the unfolding events. In both of these stories, the unintended consequences of the encounters between the Christian religious and American Indian converts inspired the redefinition of the previously held definitions of who could be saintly and open to salvation. In the case of Mohawk Saint, this occurred when the Jesuits priests eventually began to tell the story of a possible saint, Catherine, although she was a Mohawk woman. According to Foner, “They did not seek to suppress all traditional religious practices.” Frances’s kindness towards Native Americans was unlike Spain’s oppression or England’s suppression. Furthermore, Foner writes, “the French worked out a complex series of military, commercial, and diplomatic connections, the most enduring relations between Indians and settlers.” Therefore, France’s kindness towards Native Americans helped develop sustainable relationships between the two groups.
Throughout history, there have been many literary studies that focused on the culture and traditions of Native Americans. Native writers have worked painstakingly on tribal histories, and their works have made us realize that we have not learned the full story of the Native American tribes. Deborah Miranda has written a collective tribal memoir, “Bad Indians”, drawing on ancestral memory that revealed aspects of an indigenous worldview and contributed to update our understanding of the mission system, settler colonialism and histories of American Indians about how they underwent cruel violence and exploitation. Her memoir successfully addressed past grievances of colonialism and also recognized and honored indigenous knowledge and identity.
Science journalist, Charles C. Mann, had successfully achieved his argumentative purpose about the “Coming of Age in the Dawnland.” Mann’s overall purpose of writing this argumentative was to show readers that there’s more to than just being called or being stereotyped as a savage- a cynical being. These beings are stereotyped into being called Indians, or Native Americans (as they are shorthand names), but they would rather be identified by their own tribe name. Charles Mann had talked about only one person in general but others as well without naming them. Mann had talked about an Indian named Tisquantum, but he, himself, does not want to be recognized as one; to be more recognized as the “first and foremost as a citizen of Patuxet,”(Mann 24).
Petalesharo’s writing reflected the treatment of Native Americans during the 1800s. Being a Native American himself, Petalesharo was able to give perspective on a point in history typically viewed from a white man’s opinion. The excerpt “Petalesharo” explains how the Native American was able “to prevent young women captured by other tribes from being sacrificed”, making Petalesharo well liked by the Americans (588). Petalesharo gave the “Speech of the Pawnee Chief” infront of Americans to convey the differences between Native Americans and Americans through emotion, logic, and credibility, which showed how the two groups will never be the same, but still can coexist in the world together.
As the son of a Comanche chief and a white captive by the name of Cynthia Ann Parker, Quanah Parker rose from the status of a Comanche warrior to their tribal leader. Although not much is known about Parker’s personal life and early years, he plays a vital role in William T. Hagan’s book “Quanah Parker, Comanche Chief”. In this book, Hagan identifies the Comanche Chief through his upbringing to his death, describing his transactions with local Indian agents, presidents, high officials in Washington and the cattlemen of the western United States territory. The author presents the Indian chief as a “cultural broker” between the cultures of the white southerners and his tribal members, presenting a blend of beliefs that are heralded as progressive and traditional as he maintained the control and organization of his tribe. A significant theme that Lynn Hunt explores is representational culture. Specifically, how the family and individual members of the family are depicted through the arts and literature in the advent of the printing revolution. This is a broader theme explored throughout the monograph. Representations of the fallen King, the Band of Brothers, and the Bad Mother through the despised Marie Antoinette. While this is not the main theme of the book, it gives the reader a good idea about the pervading political climate of 18th century France.
