On March 13, 1918 the USS Cyclops was scheduled to arrive in Baltimore for repairs and cargo. The only problem, it never showed up. The USS Cyclops was a naval cargo ship that at the time was heading back to Baltimore, from Rio, for repairs. The ship was also loaded with new cargo and had only one operating engine. The crew’s lack of experience and mechanical power resulted in the death of 309 people aboard the USS Cyclops in 1918.
The 3 most practical theories are a mechanical malfunction with the ship, the captain sinking the ship on purpose, and the last theory is it was sunk by a German submarine or underwater mine. The most probable of all causes is a mechanical malfunction. When the ship left Rio, it was overloaded with a new cargo that the ship had not hauled before, manganese ore. To make matters worse, the ship had only one operable engine and was headed through the mysterious Bermuda Triangle. The second most probable cause would be that the captain sunk the ship on purpose. I know this sounds ludicrous but the captain was accused of being pro-German and it was later found out that the captain had changed his name to an American name from a German name. The disaster started when one engine went out and couldn’t be repaired. To make matters worse the ship was heavily

This could have been crucial as WW1 was still going and this load of manganese ore would have been very helpful. After arriving at Rio, many of the crew reported the boat swaying from side to side much more than it should have when big or medium sized waves hit it. (The Unanswered Loss of USS Cyclops – March 1918.) This could be a sign of structural failure to the ship and that it was not seaworthy or safe. This was also the biggest loss of life in a non-war related disaster for the navy and one of the biggest losses of life in the Bermuda
In the novel, Dead Wake by Erik Larson, the author depicts a true tale of the sinking of the Lusitania. After setting sail from New York on May 1st, 1915, the Lusitania came into contact with a German U-boat, known as the U-20, who eventually sank the ship and killed thousands six days later on May 7th, 1915. However, as simple as the case may seem, Larson believes that the Lusitania’s destruction was very preventable, but those in control of the ship’s aid seemed to benefit greatly from its obliteration. This benefit, gained by Room 40, the British Royal Navy’s secret intelligence administration, was the hope that American’s on the Lusitania would die in the sinking, and therefore draw America into the war, aiding Britain. Throughout the very
His crew wanted him to turn around and threatened to kill him. So many people died on that ship. People had to even eat sawdust from wood because they were running out of food. The boat started to fall apart on his first voyage, but quickly got fixed up. They faced the lack of wind that helped the boat progress.
Larson not only blames the sinking of this ship upon the submarine that sunk the ship, but also he spies who withheld information about another safe route the ship could have used. Another claim was that because the cruiser had to take on passengers from another ship, The Cameronia, the ship was then delayed for about two days, and could not continue on the original course time, so you could say they ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Another major problem on this ship was that the workers were not fully executing the drills they were instructed to do on a daily basis, and not instructing the passengers to learn the procedure either. On page 208, it states, “ Passengers had been instructed to keep their
In May 1915, a German U-boat sunk the British passenger ship Lusitania off the coast of Ireland. With more than 1,900 people aboard, killing at least 1,100 people including more than 120 Americans. Although the ship may have been carrying military equipment along with the civilians, the Americans weren’t warned before the sinking. Others understood that Germany previously had unambiguously alerted all neutral passengers of Atlantic vessels to the potential for submarine attacks on British ships and that Germany considered the Lusitania a British, therefore an “enemy ship.” The United States eventually protested the action, and Germany apologized and pledged to end unrestricted submarine warfare.
After being in the sea for five days, they did not believe that anyone was coming. “All the same, they felt hopeless, despairing that rescue would ever come.” (Left For Dead p. 88) They never even saw a ship or a plane. When they were finally rescued, some sailors
They think the ship is a disaster waiting to hit water. After a long time the Monitor was finally complete. Captain Ericsson decided to test the ship in the East River. The first time the ship hit the water everyone held their breath. The ship moved around in the waves but did not sink.
On July 23, 1958 the USS Nautilus departed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii under top secret orders to conduct “Operation Sunshine”. They crossed the North Pole on August 3, 1958 at 11:15 pm. Operation Sunshine was the first crossing of the North Pole by ship. Also it was a “warning to the USSR that we could operate warship along their long arctic border in secret.” said LCDR, Benjamin Amdur, USN.
At the beginning of the war, many accidents were due to mechanical problems with planes, bad weather and errors in navigation. Louie called the B-24 that they flew on a “Flying Coffin.” “Flying the B-24, one of the world’s heaviest planes, was like wrestling a bear” (Hillenbrand 55). On Thursday, May 27, 1943, Louie, his friend Phil and Cuppernill were headed to Honolulu for their day off. Before they left, a lieutenant flagged them down and told them there were going a mission to search for a missing pilot.
On June 15th, The Board of Trade investigated on the ships sinking concluding that the ship was unarmed by German forces during
Someone is Circe a pretty woman that can turn people into pigs and other animals and someone else was a Cyclops, if they were to fight who do you think would win? The cyclops will get really angry, also Circe is magical in the book the Odyssey by Homer. Although the book the Odyssey has many villains Circe and the cyclopes are most most important in the book Odyssey by Homer. Although the Odyssey is filled with many villains, some people think that the cyclops and circe are the most important for many reasons.
The US Coast Guard eventually gave up the search & rescue operation after having combed a large part of the sea area for several days.” (www.bermuda-attractions.com). They might not know where this ship went but many people think that it’s most likely in the Bermuda triangle. Not only boats sink there though. In 2008 a plane crashed into the Bermuda triangle also.
The Titanic’s maiden voyage was a disaster because the people didn’t prepare for things like this. Most ships go over a safety procedures, but the Titanic didn’t do such a thing. They only rescued wealthy people, which I felt was wrong. Some passengers jumped off the ship in desperation. Whoever drove the ship couldn’t have been paying attention.
Some authors wrote about the reasons behind the disappearance about these ships and planes. They suggested it might be due to a strange magnetic anomaly that affects compass readings. In fact, Columbus noted this when he sailed through the area in 1492. Others, concluded that methane eruptions from the ocean might suddenly be causing the ship to sink. The term ?
Titanic was deemed unsinkable because it had 15 watertight bulkheads and a double bottom. The problem with this though was that “the watertight compartment design contained a flaw that was a critical factor in Titanic’s sinking: While the individual bulkheads were indeed watertight, the walls separating the bulkheads extended only a few feet above the waterline, so water could pour from one compartment into another, especially if the ship began to list or pitch forward.” Many people say that the ship was doomed from the start. On April 10th 1912, The Titanic set sail for Cherbourg, France and then to Queenstown, Ireland.
Unsinkable boat, if there is someone says this, I really believe that most of people will imagine to the story of luxurious big boat that became one of tragic history. The story of Titanic was revealed pass through the movie ‘Titanic’ which directed by James Cameron, full quality director in Hollywood. It is the movie that James got inspiration from real situation that happened to this boat in 1912. Titanic is the name of white boat which travelled from England to New York City. The characteristics that make Titanic different from other boat in that period are capaciousness and luxury of it.
