The rate at which deforestation is increasing globally is very alarming. Over the years, deforestation is increasing at a dangerous level. Deforestation is on the rise due to the fact that out of the total population on earth, just a little percentage are well informed about deforestation, its causes and effects. This lack of information has not just affected the earth physically but is also affecting the total populace and our economy. According to Merriam Webster pocket dictionary, deforestation is said to be, ‘the action or process of clearing a forest; also the state of having been cleared of forest’. Over the years, most forests cover around the world have been cleared, thus reducing the earth’s green cover. According to a research by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations(FAO), ‘Around 13 million hectares of forest were converted to other uses or lost through natural causes each year in the last decade compared to 16 million hectares per year in the 1990s. Another finding by FAO states that, ‘the net change in forest area in the period 2000–2010 is estimated at –5.2 million hectares per year (an area about the size of Costa Rica), down from –8.3 million hectares per year in the period 1990–2000’. Forests helps in stabilizing our climate. The destruction of forests most especially rain forest will totally change global climate.
