The Causes of Divorce in Taiwan
Do you know which country in Asia with highest divorce rate? The answer is Taiwan. According to the statistic released by the Ministry of Interior of Taiwan, there are 53,448 couples divorced in 2015 and up 0.6 percent from the previous year. It means that about 25 percent to 30 percent of marriages in Taiwan are ending in divorce, more than double the number in the past ten years ago. It can be seen that the marital problems and the rising rate of divorce are the important social issues that we should face. However, divorce can occur for many reasons. There are three main reasons of divorce in Taiwan, extramarital affair, domestic violence, and serious dissension.

Divorce can be a triggering event for domestic violence. There are 42% of US divorced women pointed out that the main reason for divorce is domestic violence, and it is also a factor in the breakdown of a marriage in Taiwan. According to the data released by the Ministry of the Interior in 2011, there are 104,315 incidents of domestic violence were reported. In the other words, there are 286 cases of domestic violence occur every day on average. In addition, there are up to 25% women likely to be victims of domestic violence in Taiwan and 10% of them have been injured in the past year. (The Ministry of Health and Welfare,2016). Due to the occurrence of domestic violence, there are about 26,000 people have applied for restraining order, and some of them have implemented the proceedings of legal divorce. The number is quite impressive. However, through many social cases, we can find out that the occurrence of domestic violence in Taiwan has a strong relationship with the spouse who slides into bad habits, such as long-term alcoholism and gambling. For the reason that they often abuse their spouses to let off some steam, the occurrence of domestic violence become more and more frequent and indirectly lead to an increase in divorce rates. Currently, there is one couple divorce in every ten minutes on average in Taiwan. The divorce rate is not only the highest in Asia, but also the third place around the world.
