The Internet is a global network connecting millions of computers and is being incorporated as part of our everyday life because the usage of internet has been rising worldwide. People from all ages use the internet whether it is at home, work or schools in order to get work done, get news from all over the world and also to find entertainment. In 2005, a research conducted by Wieland reported that 9 - 15 million people in the United States used the internet daily and in every three months the rate of use would increase by 25%. According to the statistics by the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), depression is known to be the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3. The data showed that it affects almost 6.7 percent of the U.S population from the age of 18 and above in a year. It was also shown that depression tends to be more prevalent in women than in men. According to the DSM-5, which is a manual that is used to diagnose many types of mental disorders, depression occurs when an individual have at least five of the following symptoms at the same time which is; having a depressed mood during most of the day, fatigue or loss of energy almost every day, feelings of worthlessness or guilt almost every day, impaired concentration, indecisiveness, insomnia or hypersomnia almost every day, noticeable diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities nearly every day, recurring thoughts of death or suicide, a sense of restlessness or being slowed down and significant weight loss or weight gain. There also has been a relationship between depression and Internet addiction. When a person has an unpleasant day or event, they will find a way to forget about the entire problem or to release the stress they have. Internet is the place where they can express it out because internet is easy to get access to. The feeling of depression can be relieved in a short period of time when they get access to the internet. The internet can become a way for people to express their feelings of depression, but overusing it by spending too much time logging on to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube can make things go bad. The downside of it is that, Internet addiction can lead to depression when a person cling or depend on the internet too
Since the dawn of time humanity has evolved new ways of thinking, learning, and doing. In the 1980’s the internet was born. The internet has acted as a global source of information. Like everything in this world, the internet has its pros & cons. A number of people have recently suggested that the internet can cause physical and physiological changes to the human brain.
The DSM classifies an individual with a major depressive disorder as someone who has had at least 5 of the following attributes within the previous two weeks on a near daily basis, and for the majority of each day. Out the below list of attributes, the first two hold significant weight: a depressed mood and a significantly reduced pleasure,
Moreover, this addiction isn’t substance abuse, but it’s one of the few things that are available to almost everyone in the U.S. The question to ask is who is benefiting from this addiction? It isn’t the addict, and it isn’t the people around them. The only people this affects positively are the people on top. With a nation full of mindless internet addicts, it's easy to have the control you’ve always wanted.
The internet addiction is becoming so bad that it’s being related to eating disorders. People who are so addicted can’t just give it up, they have to learn “moderation and controlled use.” (Parker-Pope, 1) In the short story, “There will come soft rains” it’s
The internet is a big part of our lives. It can change our lives and ruin them at the same time, that’s why you have to be careful. Many students are using it for school and parents use it for work. reSTART is a $14,500 forty-five-day program that helps people get rid of their addiction problems by doing outdoor activities like building chicken coops, cooking hamburgers, and engaging in therapy in an outdoor setting. Beato then proceeds to give incidents where addiction has caused some people to lose jobs, and some to do outrageous things like a teen in Ohio shooting his mother and father for taking away his Xbox, or how 200 students at a university went for 24-hours without social media, some of them stating that they felt “miserable, and crazy.” In a 2009 study it was found that 3 to 6 percent of internet users were addicted and that over the years internet addiction has the potential to grow more than any other addiction. Although internet addiction is not being included on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the American Psychiatric Association will think about adding it to the “behavioral addictions” category as more research data is
Mood disorders are among the most prevalent forms of mental illness. Severe forms of depression affect 2%–5% of the U.S. population, and up to 20% of the population suffers from milder forms of the illness. Depression is almost twice more common in females than males. ( (Nestler et al., 2002). Depression is often described as a stress-related disorder, and there is good evidence that episodes of depression often occur in the context of some form of stress.
Throughout the nation and our world people are suffering from this disease. Depression effects people of both genders, all ages, and any background. The history of mental illness, specifically depression were extremely helpful in today’s treatment and diagnosis. We know that all individuals are different and because of this, we can assume that each case of mental illness, more specifically depression, is unique in its own way as well. One treatment that is very effective for one person may not be equally as effective in a similar case simply because of the differences in patients.
Behavioral changes from one generation to the next naturally occur little by little. Nonetheless, changes in adolescent behavior from the millennial generation triumphing it have been substantial and revolutionary. Today’s teens have never witnessed a world without internet. The majority of them possess smartphones and waste several hours each week on social media. But while numerous parents may feel allayed about their teens’ seeming uninterested in drinking, driving and dating, they could perhaps be overlooking the effects that continuous internet access has on their teens’ mental well-being.

Despite the benefits that the Internet brings, its negative impacts such as excessive, misuse, physical and psychological problems have drawn the attention of many researchers (Greenfield, 2000).
