Causes of Lack of Sleep
Do you know how many people around you have a problem of lack of sleep? Research shows that per person needs six to eight hours of daily sleep. However, in Taiwan, the average of sleep hour is only six point eight hours per night. It can be seen that lack of sleep is a common problem of Taiwanese. Although most people have such a problem, there are different causes that lead to people lack sleep, especially lifestyle and habits, the state of body and mind, and the different roles and challenges in different ages.
First of all, it is the lifestyle and habits. Some people have the habit of drinking coffee and tea every day. They think these caffeined drinks are helpful for refreshing themselves. However, caffeine is

I divided the age into three major stages. The first stage is the studying process. School work is the focus of junior and senior high school students’ lives. In order to get good grades, and go into an ideal school, many students go to cram schools for numerous hour tutorial classes after school. Moreover, due to too much homework, they often need to stay up late to complete them. As a result, their sleep time is compressed, and leads to lack of sleep. Research shows that there are seventy percent of junior and senior high school students sleep less than six hours. It can be said that the problem of lack of sleep of students is quite general. The second stage is the college life. Getting rid of relatively heavy school work, a great group of college students puts emphasis on the brilliant nightlife and school clubs. At midnight, there are often a lot of students go to bars or nightclubs to have a wild party. Besides, there are also some club fanatics who usually stay at school overnight in order to participate in various activities. However, staying up late becomes the norm of college students. Therefore, lack of sleep is a common problem for them, and even cause them to skip classes. The third stage is the member of society. When people start to work, they may work under a great stress and may need to spend time schmoozing with their clients. The busy work coupled with business entertainment may make them
Students are being woken up in the middle of a deep sleep. Being an alumnus of Melrose High School, I also remember the exhaustion I felt during the week. This can be detrimental to not only the learning but also their health. Sleep deprivation increases risk taking behavior, substance abuse, and impedes judgment and decision making ability. Many districts have taken part in this time shift.
starting times begin at 7 A.M in the morning, making teenagers wake up around 5:00 A.M to 6:30 A.M. causing teenagers that stayed up last night weary and fatigued when they arrive at school. Sleep is an enormous part of growth, health, and prevention of stress, think about what happens when you lack sleep. Almost anybody that is exhausted will have lack of focus throughout the day. 28% of tired students tend to fall asleep in their first class causing a harmful grade. Some sleepy students do not even bother to show up to school, contributing to drop out rates and damaging grades to rise.
Did you know that roughly half of your life will be spent sleeping? Without sleep, you can not think clearly, are unable to physically do things at peak efficiency. Teenagers can find it harder to get to bed, and harder to get up in the morning, because of the changing of their internal sleep clocks. What is worse is that school, homework, and other extra curricular activities can interfere with the sleep cycle. It has been suggested that high school classes start later and end later.
Not getting enough sleep is not only unhealthy, it dangerous. In the article “Sleep to Succeed” it shows how any teens really do need sleep. They wouldn’t be able to function without it. If we don’t, we won’t be able to be social or have good grades. In this article it also states “Sleep deprivation is a serious issue for many teens.
Scientists and Researchers have itemized that an estimated six to nine hours of sleep are necessary for a plentiful night’s rest, although, this is not the case for a vast majority of Americans (Fisher np). Less than one-third of high school students claim to get over eight hours of sleep per night, let alone nine (Fisher np). Theresa Fisher exclaimed that nearly 70-million people living in the United States undergo sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation is the condition of not having enough sleep and can be acute or
A report by Newsweek says that “Perpetual lack of sleep is tied to diabetes, heart disease, obesity, depression and a shortened life span in adults, underscoring the importance of establishing good sleep habits early in life”(1). We may be fine without sufficient sleep now, but health consequences will show later in life. Diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are already big problems in America. An article by CNN says that “Adolescents that go to sleep at midnight or later are also more likely to suffer from depression and have suicidal thoughts” (1). The mental health of students at Clarke should not be overlooked.
About 87 percent of American high school students are chronically sleep deprived, according to a 2006 survey from the National Sleep Foundation. Most middle schoolers and high schoolers are sleep deprived because school starts too early. Most schools start really early, causing students to not get enough sleep. Schools should start later to prevent emotional disorders, depression, and anxiety from being sleep deprived.
Students need about ten hours of sleep; however, most students, especially teens, only get around seven hours of sleep. If school started later we would be able to sleep in longer which could increase our concentration in class. It will also improve your health if you get the right amount of sleep. Teenagers are in an important stage of their growth, which means that they should get all the sleep they need. We need at least 9-10 hours of sleep and it’s proven that only 15% of teenagers get the amount of sleep they need.
Shaden Tweeten English III Mr. Bertelsen 9 November 2016 Starting School Later: A Benefit for All Everybody knows it: a teenager’s favorite activity to do is sleep. In fact, for some teenagers, it seems as though that is all they do. This may not be a case of laziness however, since recent studies have said that a teenager’s sleep rhythms make it difficult for them to go to sleep and wake up early. Unfortunately, teenagers have to break their rhythms often with their involvement in school programs that have them up in some cases as early as 5:00 A.M. Students are tired, and can barely make it through the day without falling asleep.
These long hours and minimal amount of sleep can be associated with learning, judgement, and memory impairments. Knowing the symptoms, effects/ risks, and management of sleep deprivation can help nurses and physicians address and be aware of the problem early on. Symptoms of Sleep Deprivation There are many symptoms that can be observed in someone who is sleep deprived.
America’s high schools are in desperate need of help. Students should feel there is a purpose in going to school and getting an education. They need to be more motivated to go to school. The amount of tests students take in High School is ridiculous. Students need to take less standardized tests.
Quarter 1 Assessment: Annotated Bibliography Thesis Statement: Due to adolescent sleep patterns, school needs to start at 10:00AM Source 1: The UCLA Health website tells how teenage sleep patterns differ from adults, due to changing bodies, and internal sleep clocks. This informational database is based on college research. The title of this page is “Sleep and Teens”.
Sleep deprivation is the lack of sleep needed to function to full potential. While college is known for staying up all night, and cramming for exams, this term of sleep deprivation is starting to take a serious toll. Over the years the sleeping patterns of students attending college and universities has changed dramatically. Studies show that as time goes on the average night of sleep students are getting is decreasing drastically (Jensen, 2003). The way students are falling into this lack of sleep are by forming an irregular sleep-wake cycle, which consists of getting little to no sleep during the week, then on weekends catching up on all the missed sleep.
