“Without strong and informed public pressure, neither government nor industry will lead us to a cleaner environment,” (Toronto Star p. G08). This statement can be seen as true for many people in the world do not worry about pollution for it does not directly affect them yet! However, it actually does in every way just not in a way that is instantly noticed by all. The only time anyone now speaks of pollution issues is when a major event happens such as the BP oil spill back in 2010. The cause of pollution directly affects our lives by contaminating the oceans, contaminating the soil, and our health. Mankind is one of the largest contributors to pollution in this world. Through the advancement of technology and a “pollute now clean later,” …show more content…
However, with these in place marine life is still at risk due to the amount of oil tankers that have been implemented over the past decade. “A single wreck can now discharge over 300,000 tons of crude oil in a few hours,” (Saffache) this is one of the biggest issues towards oil spills for it can have dire consequences while tankers are far away from any response teams to help clean up the mess as the tankers are in the middle of the ocean. For example, the media coverage on the Amoco Cadiz wreck which led to millions of marine life and thousands of birds to be killed “at the time of the Amoco Cadiz wreck, tens of millions of marine invertebrates and tens of thousands of birds perished,” …show more content…
However, air pollution is not only from these emissions but is more defined as any particle in the air that does not directly belong in the air. This can be seen with volcanic eruptions and all of the smoke produced in the air would be considered to be air pollution. Although, those are more natural occurrences and although they can be hazardous it is not what is thought of with normal air pollution. Since, natural air pollution is out of mankind’s control society focuses more on the air pollution caused from everyday lifestyles. China has some of the worse kinds of air pollution caused from their environment that it causes a haze cloud that is extremely hazardous. “According to the Global Burden of Disease Study a frightening 3·2 million people died from air pollution in 2010--2·1 million were from Asia,” (Peng). This haze the China experiences alone is considered to be more dangerous than the SARS epidemic and cigarette smoke alone. As stated before advancements in society bring more pollution in developing countries causing a greater threat to mankind “Air pollution in China is mainly caused by coal, motor vehicles, and industrial dust, and is linked with the rapid economic development,”
Offshore Drilling Every year, in the United States alone, 565 million barrels or oil are extracted as a result of offshore drilling; totaling a startling amount of roughly 1.5 million barrels a day. Consequently, these threatening practices are negatively impacting marine mammals, sea birds, sea turtles, and fish. Although drilling offshore provides access to expensive resources such as oil, it heavily contributes to the extinction and endangerment of animals, and the disruption of marine ecosystems, thus these practices should be prohibited and viewed as unethical. To begin, new techniques of horizontal drilling allow for even greater amounts of oil to be extracted from a single well, producing problems in infrastructure on land.
During school, we 've always been taught a little about pollution, how to recycle and even practiced a few things that will help improve this issue. This has been an ongoing issue for years and it can make some feel like what 's the use of trying to make a change now. Don 't get me wrong, things have been done, but more could be done as well. I myself could make a few changes too. If we really researched the damage that these things are doing to our precious earth we would want to do more.
“The Filth They Breathe in China,” by Michael Auslin reflects on what is happening to the air and water in China. This article describes the air pollution and why it is happening. It tells us what this is doing to our health and what scientist are saying. China 's air pollution has had great deal of problems and that the united states should step in to help generate better lives.
An example of air pollution that has become more prominent in the last few years has been acid rain. Acid rain had increased the marginal social cost on the American people through its risks of a persons health, however, most people only realize the marginal social benefits that it represents, like the goods that are made, with the rain as their product. Title IV of the Clean Air Act is where we find the laws that regulate Acid Deposition, which occurs when sulfur and nitrogen emissions combined with other substances, are changed in the atmosphere and then dropped back on Earth in a form that is very harmful to a persons and the environments health. The Clean Water Act was put into place in order to create a system so that there aren 't too many pollutants released into the U.S. 's water supply and to make sure that the water is deemed as safe for Americans to use and drink from.
Some cities in china have everyone wear gas masks when they go outside. That 's just tragic! Can you imagine getting lung cancer for standing outside for 10 minutes? Cars can release 2 different kinds of pollution. There is primary pollution that goes straight into the air to pollute it and secondary pollution.
Along with food, water, and shelter, the air we breathe is essential to life. If we do not have clean air to breathe, we will become ill and even die. If we do not prioritize the air we breathe, the pollution tragedies such as what happened in Delhi last November 2016 and the Southern Plains during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s will strike again. Humans’ indifference, attempts to improve their life, or both. Sometimes when people try to improve human life, they end up harming it; in finding solutions to these man-made problems, we must consider short and long term solutions.
1. Introduction Air pollutin is a public health concern and it has been since the discovery of fire. Incidents and episodes of air pollution have been recorded throughout the history. Air pollution is divided into two, it is the indoor air pollution and the outdoor air pollution. Indoor air pollution is produced in households or at offices by pollutants such as tobacco smoke, household products or pesticides.
“ Natural gas industry has been identified as a major source of water pollution “ ( source 1 ). This quote from source 1 explains how out of all the ways of polluting the oceans, oil is always one of the worst. “ 8 million metric tons of plastic trash enters the sea from land every year “ ( source 4 ). This quote from source number 4 explains how every year tons and tons of plastic from land, gets into the oceans and continues to pollute. Garbage is polluting the oceans so much that the water is getting so bad, people are getting ill from drinking
According to BBC News (2016), air pollution in Beijing is always in unhealthy stage. Based on 2008 to 2015, Beijing had about 49 out of 100 percent was in unhealthy stage, 14 out of 100 percent was in very unhealthy stage, and 4 out of 100 percent was in hazardous stage. Staying in a bad air or water pollution country is very tough for life. Recent research has shown that there have 4,400 people killed in pollution per day. Sometimes, the school would cancel the class because of air pollution.
Karin 20/08/2014 English 8A Nearly everyday in our lives, we see banners, magazines, newspapers, as well as posters telling us to be environmental friendly and to stop pollution. But do people listen to the advices? Do people realize that pollution is one of the biggest global killers? Pollution is the number 1 cause of death in the developing world; it kills approximately 10 million people every year. It’s hard to tell when and where pollution began.
Pollution can 't be stopped unless we all take action. How do we do that? There are already many groups working extraordinarily hard to make progress but it still isn 't enough. The only way we can make change is if we spread the word and help. Some ways we can help is stop littering, volunteer in clean up groups, and bring reusable grocery bags when shopping to reduce trash.
To become a sustainable society, we must eliminate our contributions to: No1. The increase of concentrations of substances extracted from the Earth’s crust (heavy metals and fossil fuels) No2. The increase of concentrations of substances produced by society (plastics, dioxins and DDT) No3. The physical degradation of nature and natural processes (harvesting forests and destroying habitat)
Water pollution is a serious issue as not only is water the most precious natural resource, but all sources of water support life that is very necessary for the survival of the planet. Water pollution destroys life and ecology and such damage is irreparable. Those who are still not serious about water pollution must also remember that the pollutants present in water not only destroy the life in the rivers and oceans, but also affect our food chain. Many people have the wrong notion that since they are not disposing the pollutants in the water they are not to blame. These people forget that 70% of the earth is covered by water, and any activity on the land can wash to the seas and oceans.
Following the industrial revolution, it took industrialized countries more than 200 years to establish a living standard under which an environmental movement could emerge. Furthermore, the gap worldwide between the rich and the poor is widening (OECD, 2015). As a reaction, the growing population from developing countries understandably demands equitable living conditions compared to citizens in Europe or the United States. However, establishing higher standards of living is opposed to concentrating efforts on reducing emissions. As a result there will be decades of ever-increasing GHGs globally, currently primarily caused by developed countries and by developing countries in the
Focusing on reducing air pollutants in the Earth’s atmosphere, it creates an environmentally healthy place to live in and encourage people to work together for a common cause, thus making the world a better place. In order to solve such a problem, a strong understanding is needed. Air pollution is one of the various forms of pollution. It is the presence of foreign toxic substances or pollutants into the air.
