There is great injustice and gloom in the thought of innocent people being rounded up and exterminated like rats, based exclusively on the fact of where they have come from or who their ancestors are, but even worse than the thought of such horrid acts against humanity is the fact that this has happened before. (Shalev) July 16, 1942, in the first light of dawn the French police set out for the same action against the Jews as the Nazis in Germany were taking (Klieger). That same day 12,000 Jews were crammed into a bicycle stadium like cattle on a trailer (Davoust). After they were forced there they were kept in unsanitary and crowded conditions for days (Davoust). The police stayed ready with guns and batons drawn ready to attach the unarmed civilians if they were to try to escape (Klieger). Many things are responsible for this dark day in human history, mistrust, war, civil unrest but at the core of it was Anti-Semitism (Shalev). With the outbreak of ww2 and the Nazis spreading lies and vile propaganda throughout their own country and the occupied territories negative feelings towards the Jews were strong and growing even in the heart of France (Shalev). So because of the Nazi propaganda machine in full swing and …show more content…
There were 12,000 Jews that were captured but the Germans had expected to bring in far more, as Olivier Accarie Pierson had said “Many policemen had leaked the information the day before; the Germans were furious because They had hoped to arrest 27,427 Jews in and around Paris, but eventually they ‘only’ arrested 13,152, ” (Davoust). Thanks to the early warning of the French police many were able to escape with their lives so there were some who were willing to stand for what is right (Shalev). Some police turned a blind eye when Jews were sneaking away and some were even reported to have been actively helped them by giving food and direction
The French SS division, led by General Carl Aldrecht Oberg, was known for being particularly ruthless and unsettlingly efficient. Despite having one of the highest capture rates, approximately 3000 Jews a week, in all of Europe, Oberg’s superior, and the executive officer in charge organizing the capture and deportation of
Many of the Jews were from German, Austrian, polish, and Czech Republican. Many were advised to leave but did not with the thought in mind that they would only be taking men, like in many circumstances before. Women and children did no go into hiding. (The Holocaust in France The Vel' d'Hiv Roundup) In the ensuing week Jews were taken from the winter stadium to the concentration camp of Pithiviers and Beaune-la-Rolande.
In some places however the Government believed the Jews should be left alone. This caused an uproar among the people of Strasbourg, because of the public demand the Jews of Strasbourg were arrested and a meeting was held. “The money was indeed the thing that killed the Jews. If they had been poor and if the feudal lords had not been in debt to them, they would not have been burnt.” This shows that since the Jews were wealthy at the time many Europeans
How would you feel if you had to be worrying about the Nazi´s taking you away for being Jewish? Or living in a Nazi controlled area? In the book Black Radishes by Susan Lynn Meyer, Gustave lived in Paris with his parents and hung out with his cousins/friends Marcel and Jean-Paul everyday until the Nazis came and Gustave and his parents moved to the unoccupied zone where he worries about his family still in the occupied zone. At the end, his family finally moves to the United States fleeing from Nazi-controlled Paris. The author uses description, tone, and revealing actions to demonstrate the goal of setting up the problem.
During the time of 1933-1945 the Nazi’s implemented a series of dehumanizing actions towards the jewish. In the book “Night” by Eliezer Wiesel, Wiesel discusses his life before being deported to a concentration camp, his experience in concentrations camps, and how he was finally liberated. Through Wiesel, we are able to witness the way these unfortunate jewish people were stripped of their rights, experimented on and objectified. First of all, there were many laws that were being established that were specifically targeting the Jewish population as time was progressing in Nazi Germany. These laws made a huge impact and made it more difficult for the jewish community to live as “normal” human beings.
Before this occurs, however, the Jews are stripped of all of their freedom, belongings, and much of their clothes. Instead, the Nazis view them only by their Jewish heritage. This removes every person’s individuality, as they are defined according to what they have. The manner that the people were transported was through cattle cars. This was a particularly harsh and unhealthy environment.
In this they destroyed windows of Jewish synagogues, buildings, stores, and ended the lives of over 91 people. 30,000 people were arrested and put in Concentration
Hitler was the main aggressor during 1939 who everyone appeased to, who is infamously known for his rise to power, his persecution of Jews, and his attacks on the world to dominate, that killed so many. Neville Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister, believed in the policy of appeasement and appeased Hitler at the Munich Conference which eventually lead to the start of World War II. The Western Powers responded to aggression with appeasement, and in 1939 the world was plunged into World War II, proving to the world that collective security is a better response to aggression. Hitler’s aggression was the main reason why Allied powers felt the need to appease. In 1930, after the Reichstag fire, Adolf Hitler rose to power because he was appointed
By dehumanizing the situation, the members of Reserve Police Battalion 101 were able to justify the orders to murder the Jews, and then later suffer the lifetime terrible feelings of guilt for their
In Night one of the ways that the Jews were dehumanized was by abuse. There were beatings, “I never felt anything except the lashes of the whip... Only the first really hurt.” (Wiesel, 57) “They were forced to dig huge trenches. When they had finished their work, the men from the Gestapo began theirs.
Being a woman or an african american in the years of 1941-1945 was a harsh thing. Imagine being a woman and going to work, and you want to go home and rest but you can’t because you have to clean the house and take care of your family. Or being an African American and being segregated when they are working. But also being a Latino and getting benefits from the G.I Bill. An event that led up to the entrance and involvement of the United States in World War II was the Great Depression.
“Why dwell upon the study of the Holocaust when history is loaded with other tragedies? Because the Holocaust was unique. This is not to say that other tragedies were less horrible, only that the Holocaust was different and should not be compared and trivialized,” the author noted (Tarnor Wacks 9). A mere 71 years ago a defining feature of world history took place, in concentration camps across Eastern and Western Europe. 6 million Jews were ripped out of their homes and ultimately murdered.
Today, America is one of the world 's great superpowers and has an amazing economy. America was not always that way, and not too long ago it used to be in a time of great depression. It was going to take a huge event to turn the economy around. Luckily, america had a war brewing that was going to spark an outburst of income, jobs, and business. This war was called World War Two and it had many causes and effects on america.
There are a a lot of events that led to the beginning of World War II. But, a lot of the events leading to World War II were a direct result due to World War I. One event leading to World War II started with Hitler rising to power in the 1930s, as he was trying to rebuild Germany. As Germany, was crippled due to World War I and the Treaty of Versailles. Germany was crippled due to World War I and the Treaty of Versailles because Germany lost the war, had to take responsibility, and pay a large amount of money. This caused Germany to be in a turmoil.
The theory I find most convincing is that Wilhelm van Maaren tipped off the police because it isn’t likely that a passerby heard them or they were discovered by chance because they made sure to be as quiet as they could during both the day and the night. When the author says that Hitler made the Jews a scapegoat
