The title for the article that I have selected is Broken family: Its causes and effects on the development of children. It is written by Ruksana Saikia, a female lecturer who teaches at B. Ed College at Guwahati University in India. According to Merriam Webster (2018), family is the basic unit in society traditionally consisting of two parents rearing their children or any of various social units differing from but regarded as equivalent to the traditional family. However, when there are some problems such as different pedagogical principles, communication issues, different priorities regarding spare time and family time and long work days (Zartler et al., 2004) occur in the relationships, it may lead to divorce of parents and a broken family…show more content…
The author also illustrates that separation between family members due to the reasons of education or job are not considered as a broken family. In addition, family without father, mother or other members, but still running provisionally and systematically are also not consider as a broken family rather may just group as single-parent family or family members leave away. The next strength is the author arranges the article according to the degree of importance of ideas from the most important to the least important. For example, divorce of parents is listed as the main causes of broken family as the rates of divorces around the world continue to be increased from year to year, based on the statistics that have provided by the United Nations Data Retrieval System. In 2014 and 2015, the number of divorce cases in Finland are 13682 and 13939 (Statistics Finland) while in Belgium, the number of divorce cases is 24310 and 24414 respectively (Statista). Besides that, the weakness in this article is that in the points of one of the causes of broken family (parental or friends influence), the author has pointed out that the reason for the split of parents is that they are influenced by the advice of friends. However, in my opinion, I think that as a mutual adult, parents should calm down themselves when the issue is occurring and have a clear mindset to discuss and solve the problems with partners, rather than just to share the problems with friends or be affected by the advice of friends. In accordance with Brenda Della Casa, author of Cinderella Was A Liar, although friends are good intentions to provide relationship advice, it is essential to remember that the counsel that have given by them are based on their own experience and they only hear half of the story. The most important criteria to solve the issues is having an interdependent thoughts and confidence (Mitchell, 2012). Thus, from the point above, we can conclude that we should not blindly follow or easily affected by the advice given by friends, instead we should thoughtful and make the decisions based on our wants. Furthermore, the weakness of this article is also included the subheading does not match with the idea that have given by the author. In the text, there is a subheading explains on the problems that faced by the children with a broken family. However, under the subheading, the author also consist of the problems that faced by parents and society.
