Chapter 2 LITERATURE REVIEW A number of studies have been conducted to identify the causes of delay in construction projects. “Ravisankar et al. (2014) studied about the quantification of delay factors in the construction business. The aim of the paper was to find the top causes of construction delay and their effects. The research mainly focused on literature review and a questionnaire survey. Using the Statistical software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, survey data’s are analyzed to find out the top causes of delay. The aim of this study was: To identify causes of delay in finishing road construction projects, to document the top causes of delay in road construction projects; and to document and identified differences in perception of consultants and contractors regarding causes of delay in finishing projects by the due date. They developed questionnaire in the perceptions of contractors, clients and consultants to fulfil their objectives. They divided the questionnaire into three parts, the first part is about information of the contractors, clients and consultants. The second part is about the delay in construction and Third part is about effects of delay in construction. The causes were sub grades into eight groups they are, client related factors, contractors related factors, consultant related factors, material related factors, locker and equipment related factors, and contract related factors and contract relationship related factors. They used RII to sort the top causes and delay effects. The 10 major causes for delay are improper planning, poor site management, lack of experience, problems with sub-contractor, shortage of material, labour supply, equipment availability and failure, lack of communication and mistakes in the construction stages.
