Discrimination is the behaviour or actions, usually negative, towards an individual or group of people. Believe it or not, discrimination was being experienced by almost every single person in this world. This type of actions or more commonly called discrimination is originated by the stereotype and the prejudice itself. Basically, prejudice is the inflexible and irrational attitudes and opinions held by members of one group about another. So, if the stereotype and prejudice does not happen at the first place, discrimination will never occurred. Socialization: A lot of discriminations seem to be passed along from old generations to the young ones. The media social including television, movie and advertising also plays a crucial role in this part with publishing demeaning images and stereotypes about assorted groups, such as ethnic minorities, women, gays and lesbians, the disabled, and the elderly.

Disabled: this type of discriminations are towards the people that having a disability such as amputated or deaf. Usually the employer will neglect the applicant from this kind of person and hired a normal person first with the concept in their mind that the disabled person can’t give a good performance in their work compared to the normal workers. Discrimination is defined as the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. Sadly, not to long ago America was facing this problem with African Americans. They were being discriminated based solely on the color of their pigmen. Although now most people would never harm anyone because of their skin color, it was not always so. In fact, in 1955 when 14 year old Emmett Till was visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi, he was later shot and killed by 2 white men (Latson).
The root of any discrimination is dehumanization, no large group of people can sincerely hate or cause pain to a group of people based off of race, color, sexuality, gender, religion or any other separating factor without dehumanizing them. Every single time in history where people in power have taken advantage of a specific group of people, they have had to dehumanize them. There is no debate about that. Harper Lee not only uses To Kill a Mockingbird as a direct protest against the Jim Crow Laws, but she also protests the reason people allowed themselves to sleep at night.
The three psychological theories which are used to explain the causes of prejudice and discrimination will be evaluated and outlined in this essay. Prejudice is a negative feeling directed at members of a group just because they are part of the group. Discrimination can be seen as the behavioural expression of prejudice i.e. the behaviour or negative actions, directed at members of other group, mainly based on their sex, ethnicity, age or social class. The mass murder of Jews by the Nazi’s in the Second World War is an example of prejudice and discrimination. Prejudice comprises of affection, behaviour and cognition of an individual, whereas discrimination only involves the behaviour.

People can become a victim of prejudice attacks based on their ethnicity, race, and gender. Racism is the common form of discrimination, where certain groups within a target population are devalued. Minority groups are the victim of racism, where they are seen to have inferior social status based on one’s beliefs. Because of racism, people of color and people living in underserved communities do not receive quality resources and fair rights.

In the anti-discrimination legislation, it is known as making a group in advantaged and the other are in disadvantaged. Employment discrimination happens when employees and job applicants were discriminated because of their weaknesses, their family medical history, women that are pregnant, or the connection with a certain individual.
