9.2 NEWLY EXPERIENCED DISASTERS OF THE RESEARCH AREA/ NEWLY INTRODUCED HAZARDS AND ITS RISK AREA
9.2.1 Drought
Drought is identified as the one of the worst disaster at some FGD. Nowadays Drought occurred from Magh to Chaitra Bangla month a newer phenomenon in an increasing trend. The rise of temperature make the shortage of moisture at crop field and lack of irrigation facility due to groundwater depression make the situation worst. So that, Farmers now irrigating water from the nearest river or using ground water by the shallow engine which makes their cultivation more costly. Besides these, sources of this said irrigation water also shrinking due to river-bed become dried (Ali Toufique, IqbaL, Ahmed, & Donna, 2013). It makes farmers gradually

There are lots of Case of the Death of Human and Cattle by thunderstorm from the Atgaon Union. Recently Disaster ministry have declared the Hailstorm as a Disaster of Bangladesh after many incident of Human Death at different area of the country due to Thunderstorm in recent years. The group recommends more trees at haor to absorb thunder that could save their life at deep haor area.
Bangladesh has seen a near-record number (261 people) of deaths this year from a phenomenon that appears to be worsening with climate change: lightning strikes. Most lightning deaths usually occur during the warm months of March to July. The problem has prompted Bangladesh 's government to add lightning strikes to the country 's list of official types of disasters, which includes floods, cyclones and storm surges, earthquakes, drought and riverbank erosion, among others. As a result, the government now compensates lightning strike victims or their families with sums between 7,500 and 25,000 taka ($95 to $310). Through mid-May the government had paid 1.5 million taka ($18,400) in claims this year to families of 81 people who died because of

Researchers also predicting longer drier condition will prevail in the NE region, where the highest rainfall occurs at present. (Islam, Murshed, Khan, & Hasan, 2014). Farmer needs rains in Falgun and magh for good harvest which is now not occurred regularly whereas the rainfall now occurred at Baishakh regularly which is harmful for cultivation by damaging crops. The policy study on the probable impacts of climate change on poverty and economic growth in Bangladesh (BCAS 2009), which attempted to assess the potential adverse effects of climate change, projected a 40 percent reduction in crop production from drought and a 30 percent reduction from erratic rainfall. Same observation have come from the FGD participants of the study. Alam, Quayum, & Islam, (2010) claims that more post-harvest loss happened due to heavy
Pollan asserts that the practice of industrial farming is enabled by capitalism (369).
Statement of the Problem Among the events that have had a drastic shaping on human events throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are natural disasters. Often times, a natural disaster will leave residents of affected areas in a state of awe as they seek to understand what exactly happened. One such example is Hurricane Hugo.
Due to this unwritten law made before the drought, Parvinder Hundal, a farmer that started his business in 1986 is feeling just how devastating this drought really is. In February, he received several emails from his main water districts telling him
In Blake Hurst’s “The Omnivore’s Delusion: Against the Agri-Intellectuals,” he opposes the accusations made by tofu-eating, recycled-toilet-paper-using, self-starving Michael Pollan and his followers. Throughout “The Omnivore’s Delusion…,” Hurst mentions how methods of farming have evolved to match demands of produce. The author states that “Only ‘Industrial farming’ can possibly meet the demands of an increasing population and increased demand for food as a result of growing incomes” (Hurst 4). This quote essentially means that “Industrial Farming” is the most efficient way to farm for today’s population level. A second point that is made by Hurst is that changes made by today’s farming are necessary.
Teresa and Kevin Springs, the owners of TKO Farm go to great lengths to educate the new generation on sustainable farming, but there is some resistance. In history, farming was a means of growing all the food one needed, and in one place, but for Black farmers, it means something different. Many young African Americans resist the idea of farming because “the thought of farming leaves a bad taste in their mouth, but we believe farming is the key to independence” (“More than Just a Farm” n.d.). Teresa says. The Springs have found countless benefits with farming, and they want to pass down the knowledge they received from their co-op elders.
Industrial farms can make more products than traditional farms and that may be the reason why industrial farms are given more spotlight to and are gradually expanding while other farms are moderately deteriorating. Pollan is more understanding of the technological advances which Berry is not. Berry and Pollan agree and concur at times on the same issues of how the industrial model of agribusiness is
In addition, the small family farmers no longer have the support of its
Marino makes it known that understanding this relationship is essential in distinguishing how Shishmaref citizens have become a vulnerable community. In fact, these relationships along with historical conditions, influenced how residents in that specific community experienced disasters. In this section, the differences between a hazard and vulnerability are also highlighted to determine their interconnection with disasters; for a disaster to take place both must be present. Marino strategically follows up with chapter three to show the link between climate change, vulnerability, and disasters. The purpose of this chapter was to demonstrate how ecological changes can be contributed to the vulnerability of Shishmaref.
Thus, as Paarlberg has argued, industrial agriculture has helped reduce starvation and poverty in Africa and South-East Asia. Paarlberg’s earlier claim about increasing wheat yield in India contradicts Coline Serra’s film, in which Vandana Shiva explains that across India farmers are committing suicide at a staggering rate due to them being indebted to the fertilizer and pesticide manufacturers and the increase of diseases in their crops due to the excessive use of these chemicals. “Down to Earth”
A drought is an occurrence where there is very little rainfall, which results in a shortage of water. Drought can last up to ten years in certain places, especially desert areas. Droughts are extremely difficult to predict, and produce cracked land. They are very dangerous in places with little food and little water. Droughts can also affect farmers, due to it being so hot that their plants die.
Desertification, Deforestation, soil depletion, and water contamination are among some of the consequences of agriculture. An agricultural boom often means that an over farming and an overproduction stage occurs. This result can be worse than the pre-food famine, because now no food is being produced. Water contamination from pesticides and
The economic temptation encourages the practice of monoculture instead of running a diverse farm. Species are forced to leave and clear the land for corn plantation. However, biodiversity is vital for sustainable development because every livestock and crops are completing the food chain. The vanishing species, caused by subsidy on corn, provoke the imbalance of ecosystem and environmental crisis, like global warming. Eventually, it affects the whole city, or even the
The other big problem was the amount of money they spent on repair. With water flooding damaged streets, many homes not existing no more, electricity being cut short due to heavy rainfall and many civilians either dead or injured, money had to be taken out of the budget for the greater good. According to the Federal Emergency Manage Agency, FEMA, the estimate cost of damages was around $108 billion dollars, making it the costliest hurricane in the United States. The government responded back with an estimate amount of $700 million dollars
Flash floods may cause loss of lives and properties. Soil erosion will leads to loss of minerals for the land. The land cannot be used for
Also, farmers in these communities do not have enough money to purchase necessary supplies to farms such as seeds, tools, and farming equipment. The effects of
