The Harm of Global Arms Trade There were 464,033 total gun deaths between 1999 and 2013, almost 40% of them being homicides and 58.2% of them being suicides, and it’s only gotten worse since then. Many people believe that the arms trade is unneeded and too dangerous for what it’s worth, while arms trade supporters believe there are valid reasons to allow this idiotically dangerous trade to continue. The fact of the matter is, Global arms trade is getting too dangerous and gun control laws aren’t cutting it, it needs to stop. By trading guns and other arms globally are risking guns getting lost in the process and getting into the wrong hands. People are putting way too much time and money into it than what it’s worth. Countries spend an exorbitant amount of money to manufacture and ship weapons. “Recent data show global spending at over $1.7 trillion. 2012 saw the first dip in spending — only slightly —since 1998, in an otherwise rising trend.” (Arms Trade-a Major) Although money is not the only thing being wasted in this situation, making excess weapons to trade also uses needed materials like metal and plastic. “Metal and plastic are used to make things that we need more of like medical supplies, because they are hundreds of thousands of people in the hospital all around the world at this very second or just need medical attention.” (Arms Trade) Lastly, money is being spent to buy the materials, produce, and ship the weapons, and if a crime takes place and the transport is robbed then more money and materials need to be used to replace the previous ones. “Exports of goods and services in 2007 amounted to $17.1 trillion” (Arms Control Association) (in the world) That is a ridiculous waste of money and materials and it should not have to
