Document Based Assignment 2 On September 11, 2001 terrorists attacked our country causing one of the most devastating events in United States history. Islamic extremists seized control of four airplanes, crashing two of them into the Twin Towers, one into the Pentagon, and the last in Pennsylvania. Overall they killed 3,000 people and another 6,000 were terribly injured.9/11 is a day the U.S. will never forget, paying respect every year to all those who sadly died. The reader gets to see the major factors and power shifts that gave way to Al – Qaeda being the powerhouse it became. In the last few chapters of the book Lawrence Wright talks about 9/11 the event and what came after the tragedy and how the U.S. handled them. Lawrence Wright spent nearly five years tracking down as many people as he could find who had any knowledge of what happened on this tragic day.

Everyone knows where they were when they first found out. Every TV in America tuned in to see the plane crash into the tower in a fiery explosion. As the Twin Towers fell at 10:00 a.m., fear rose in the hearts of millions of Americans. Emotions running high, they lashed out at the first target that came to mind. Unfortunately, they chose the religion of the terrorists and not the group.
