1.0 Background of the study Malaysia is a unique country with multiracial peoples of different religions, cultures and languages. The three largest ethnics in Malaysia are Malay, Chinese and Indian. In Sabah and Sarawak, there are indigenous ethnic groups with their own unique culture and heritage. For example, ‘Iban’, ‘Bidayuh’, ‘Kadazandusun’, ‘Murut’, and others as well. The Federation of Malaysia comprises 13 states in Peninsular Malaysia and the states of Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo. There are also 3 federal territories namely Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan. In the aspect of economy, Malaysia is a developing country with a highly open upper-middle income. 1.3 Research Objectives This research attempts to achieve several objectives. There are two forms of objectives which are general objective and specific objectives. 1.3.1 General Objective The general objective of this research is to study about poverty and income inequality in Malaysian economic growth. 1.3.2 Specific Objectives I. To determine the level of poverty and income inequality in Malaysian economic growth. II. To identify the factors leading to poverty and income inequality in Malaysian economic growth. III. To study about role of government in reducing poverty and income inequality in Malaysian economic growth. 1.4 Research Hypothesis There are two research hypotheses namely: Hypothesis One (H1) Ha: There is a positive relationship between poverty and economy growth in Malaysia. Ho: There is a negative relationship between the poverty and economy growth in Malaysia. The government intervention is great to fulfil the needs of the people but this incident still arises. This research will also study about rural poverty, urban poverty and uneven income distribution in Malaysia. Thus, this research will analyse how far the poverty and income inequality can be reduced for the better economic growth of Malaysia.
