Many ideas are introduced to people’s minds when we ponder what happiness is exactly and how we can achieve it. One of the factors that comes up when we think of the causes of happiness is social interaction. Social interaction is undoubtedly a large part of life, and quite a necessary one, but it can bring many downsides with it. Many people believe social interaction can only society, but it can also pose a threat to everyone’s happiness and well­being. The main part of social interaction that these downsides apply to is social media. Social media is very common these days, and the use of it can negatively affect a user’s happiness by exemplifying false ideals for living and distracting people from the world. The definition of happiness has many variations and is very controversial, but we do seek it however we can get it. The false view of celebrities and even some normal people on social media always include someone being better than us, therefore bringing forth jealousy. This feeling of jealousy skews the view of people to the world by leaving this false perspective of greatness. No one likes to not be able to achieve that greatness and amount of followers that celebrities such as “Lady Gaga” have (Kluger 32). The realization that we cannot be that good brings sadness along with it. Social media posts like this also bring out the judging side of humans. In the passage “Don’t Worry Be Gloomy”, Susan David gives examples such as the “bespectacled, middle age man” being compared the the “22 year old blonde wearing hot pink” (David 124). In this comparison, assumptions are made that the man is more educated than the blonde. In reality, the man could actually have no education at all, and the blonde could be just out of college.
