The World Health Organization (WHO) states that in the last forty-five years the suicide rates have risen by 60% worldwide and is one of the leading causes of death in teenagers. According to American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), each year in the U.S., thousands of teenagers commit suicide with different reasons. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-to-24-year-olds after accidents and homicide, and the sixth leading cause of death for 5-to-14-year-olds. Each day in our nation there are an average of over 4,800 attempts by young people grades 7-12. And in 2014, 1,668 youth aged 13-18 committed suicide in the United States. In a study on bullying based on the CDC's survey of high school students in the United States, Dr. Adesman's team reports that depression and suicide are much more common in teens who have been the victim of bullying in school and/or electronically. (North Shore-Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Health System, 2015) Not everyone that be happy when they go to school or college, there are so many teens that be afraid of being at school. Some teens who are bullied will feel cornered and their confidence is beaten. They will think they don’t belong here in this world, think nobody love or care about them, everyone try to make fun of them and tease them all the time. These lead them to think that their life is totally worthless and don’t want to live anymore. Eventually, when they can’t stand all of these bad feelings, they will end up taking their own life. In case of Alyssa, she was a 19-year-old college student from Minnesota, U.S.A. who was being bullied by her classmates for appearing in an amateur porn flick. Alyssa was a straight A student at the University of Wisconsin River Falls, but, in April, she purchased a shotgun and then used it to shoot herself on her family’s boat. (Ahmedani, Brian K., 2015) Depression which is one of mental disorder is a major cause of suicide in the teenagers. It causes brain function differently than usual. This kind of mental disorder makes people feel sad, discouraged, or hopeless for weeks, months, or even longer. “Depression leads people to focus mostly on failures and disappointments, to focus on the negative side of their situations, and to downplay their own capabilities or worth.” (D'Arcy Lyness, 2014) Furthermore, depression also interferes with energy, concentration, sleep, and appetite. They may lose interest in activities and schoolwork that they used to like to do, seem tired, or give up easily. They may believe that they will never be happy and things will never get better anymore. It can make problems seem more difficult than they actually are and they will feel like there is no other way out of a problem or escape from these pain.
