Leadership is a very important quality that I value and strive to live out in my every day life through athletics and academics. One way that I lead through athletics is serving as our volleyball team’s floor captain. That means that I am responsible for my team’s conduct and communicating with the officials. As the setter, I have the ability to lead my teammates through constant encouragement and positive actions. For my service leaning assignment, I volunteered at the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival in support of the Montgomery County Food Bank receiving donations at the festival entrance. In volunteering at the event, I learned the differences in service learning, volunteerism and community service and will provide details in what I learned a about each. I will also provide details and examples of teamwork, communication and networking experiences gained while at the event. A brief overview of the Montgomery County Food bank will also be provided with information on the assignment task, measurable success and interaction with fellow students and organization directors. If I had one year to organize a volunteer project I would devote my time to really helping these veterans. The plan would be to organize a group of volunteers here in Charlotte, North Carolina (because it is a local problem) and open up a place to feed the homeless veterans specifically. If I could do this project how I wanted to I have a lot of great ideas. I saw one program that gave out gently used suits to homeless people to wear for job interviews, and I would like to incorporate that idea in. This building would serve as a place where veterans could come and get a home cooked meal made by volunteers and be able to sit down and have a conversation with other veterans who know what they’re going through.

During high school I have participated in many different activities and clubs. As a member of River Valley’s NHS chapter I serve as chair of the blood drive committee. I coordinate the blood drives throughout the school year along with the co-chairs and the red cross. I schedule the appointments, check those in that are donating and relay the importance of donating blood to the student body. Also, being a member of River Valley’s FFA chapter I participate in activities such as Food for America, Adopt-a-Family, and Community Breakfast. NCAA Team Works represents the ongoing community outreach efforts of the NCAA National Office staff, partners and local organizations. The Team Works brand was developed in 2012 with the goal of providing an umbrella brand to encompass all NCAA community outreach efforts.

Jennifer Swarts, the general manager of Arkport cycles says a tons of her customers are veterans and wanted to show them appreciation for their sacrfrifices. "The healing they may gain by coming to see that and the education for the younger kids because this happened not so much in their parents lifetime but their grandparents, and they do need to see the sacrifices these men and women gave for our country and the freedom that we have today," explains Swarts.

For the past two years, I have been involved in the Carmax Cares community service month. We provided assistance to the Foster Care Support Foundation in Roswell, Georgia. This organization sends out gently worn closes, shoes and other necessities to support foster care providers in the state of Georgia. We packaged items to be sent out and organized their warehouse inventory. On campus I am an active member of SABAC as well as the Georgia Club.

The organization, which I decided to volunteer two hours of my day to, was Cumac. Cumac is located in Paterson, New Jersey and they work to serve the people in the counties of Passaic, Paterson, and Northern New Jersey. They work with a staff of 21 and volunteers from all over to help people in need with food and supplies they would need to survive. Their mission statement is: “CUMAC feeds people and changes lives. It works to alleviate hunger and its root causes for those in need in Paterson, Passaic County, and northern New Jersey.” People are starving all over the world and it’s a great initiative by this company to try and do something about it starting from counties in their city.

Community service does not only have a profound impact on our community, but the impact it has on the individual people is even greater. The concept of community service has always been something that I grew up with, and now that I am older I better understand how important community service is for society. I have participated in community service activities. Starting in elementary school, I helped feed the homeless and rescue animals. Even with my wide range of volunteer experience, it was difficult to find an activity that would be meaningful and fulfill my thirty-hour obligation for my senior project. Despite the many community service opportunities available, it was hard to find one that really resonated with me.
