Even as there are certainly some positive role models for teens among today’s celebrities, there are also many who provide an unquestionably negative influence. Based on a poll, 40% of nine and ten year-olds had tried losing weight and at age thirteen (Body Image and Gender Identity, 2002), 53% of girls were unhappy with their image (National Institute on Media and the Family). Now, this cannot all be responsible on the media, but with celebrities becoming thinner and thinner, much self-confidence is lost and images of television stars or models have been associated to body discontentment (National Institute on Media and the Family). Celebrities need to be worried about their image because of the unpleasant fact that it causes young fans to struggle to be unhealthily thin. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that eating disorders affect more than five million Americans a year, with disorders usually beginning in the youth or as early as eight. The path to stardom, however, is not one that most of these “media-inundated”, as Penrod describes, youth will find to be a legitimate life choice (3). The downside to our culture’s fascination with celebrities is that an image has been implanted in the minds of their followers. This image, as Penrod states, has been “presented by modern celebrities suggesting that intellectualism has no ties to success and social legitimacy (3).” As quoted by Penrod, the 2000 census concluded that “People holding doctorate degrees earned more than twice the salary of high school graduates (4).”This set of ideals one of the hardest ideals to remove from the upcoming generation, as a mindset is often times cemented to the very core of a person.
Dissatisfaction amongst today’s youth regarding their personal body image is increasingly common, warranting a necessary change in the norms and behaviours that are portrayed to Canadian youth. The necessary change that must be implemented moving forward is the portrayal of healthy and attainable body images through media. A 2012 ABC News article stated the average model weighs 23% less than the average woman (Lovett, 2012). Such an appalling statistic is something that must be tackled as we progress toward the future seeing as it showcases to the youth of today that anorexia and unhealthy body weight is seen as desirable or attractive. The relation between such a statistic and anorexia is clear.
A multitude of people may argue that celebrities have a negative effect on teens, but Collin Palmer refuses to agree. Palmer, author of A Healthy Obsession, believes that the drama surrounding celebrity obsession is simply exaggerated. He also believes that some teens may be a little obsessed, but he reassures us that isn’t an unhealthy thing. Although Collin Palmer has a couple of agreeable points, King is correct when she said celebrities have a strong, negative effect on us. Teens do love to socialize, but sometimes they can’t find a topic.
Every girl dreams of Hollywood star’s figure, but not everyone knows that celebrities have to make sacrifices to cause envy among ordinary people. 1. They have their own element, you have your own There are no disputes, many celebrities have great figures. But we should not forget - they paid for it.
Their study focused on how fame fluctuated (if at all) for both celebrities in the top tier of fame, and for the secondary tiered or ‘minor’ celebrities. They propose three elements of fame, including Self-Reinforcement in which individuals use various methods to create and stabilize their fame, Extreme Inequality, in which they point out just how imbalanced the allocation of fame is. Fame is mostly devoted to established celebrities and institutions, leaving little room for new comers (Rijt, et al., 2009). The third and final element they proposed was the High Mobility of fame. This element suggests that fame is ephemeral, and can be attached and detached from individuals or institutions very easily.
Many of these celebrities have created a toxic environment that builds peer pressure in society. As seen with advertisements and body shaming that celebrities do whether it 's meant or not people are being influenced by this. Individuals have a growing amount of peer pressure to follow celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and follow their trends due to the poisoning of pure pressure. People may not fit in if they don’t follow to the status quo which has the potential to lead to a ruined society. Individuals are wasting time on entertainment while they can be doing more productive things.
Men and women nowadays are starting to lose self-confidence in themselves and their body shape, which is negatively impacting the definition of how beauty and body shape are portrayed. “...97% of all women who had participated in a recent poll by Glamour magazine were self-deprecating about their body image at least once during their lives”(Lin 102). Studies have shown that women who occupy most of their time worrying about body image tend to have an eating disorder and distress which impairs the quality of life. Body image issues have recently started to become a problem in today’s society because of social media, magazines, and television.
In “Teenagers and Their Need for The Spotlight,” originally published in 2013 by Idaho State Journal, journalist Michael H. O’Donnell contends that the constant need for attention that teenagers crave coupled with their impulsive behavior produces disastrous results. O’Donnell claims that teenagers would do anything to receive recognition from not only their peers, but the public, even going as far as murdering someone for publicity. He further argues that “... the murder case of Cassie Jo [serves as an example], where teenagers who wish for recognition commit an action out of stupidity” consequently leading to the death of one of their closest friends. According to “Teenagers and Their Need for the Spotlight,” those who crave attention do
Since MTV has such a large hand in shaping the young minds of today, it is important that both parents and children are aware of the impact MTV has in their daily lives. In assessing the impact and effect of popular cultural forms like MTV, it is important to acknowledge the extent to which, rather than having them imposed upon us, we may instead appropriate or assimilate parts, whilst
Children learn by imitation, a fact that makes it incumbent upon the adults in their lives to be positive role models. In today 's media-saturated environment, however, parental influence is often diminished by the fixation that children have on the glamorous lifestyles of celebrities and athletes. When parents allow them to be their children 's primary role models, the line between fantasy and reality becomes too blurred for imparting lessons about ethics, character, and responsibility. To start with, the media 's ongoing glamorization of celebrities behaving badly often seems to make them that much more appealing to impressionable children. No matter how many times a child is told by her parents that certain behaviors are inappropriate, disrespectful or dangerous, the double standard is still pervasive.
Nonetheless, although the strong role played by the women in the family holds leverage, it is without doubt that there are negative ideologies that accompany the docu-soap (Edwards 4). These negatives consist of the following ideological issues: the very specific and inflexible perceptions and standards of female beauty, along with the strong obsession with materialism that echoes throughout each episode along with achieving the idealistic lifestyle of the famous and rich. The Kardashian-Jenner women are always dressed and presented to the highest quality. The clothes they wear are always in season, if not, then a step ahead. Being married to Kanye West, Kim in particular feels pressure to always be in dressed in the latest of outfits.
Most celebrities are arrogant, drug addicts, and aggressive. Celebrities are highly inappropriate role models for underage people. The public notices a lot of celebrity’s actions. A numerous amount of teenagers are the ones who usually watch the young celebrities such as Miley Cyrus. However, she acts arrogant because everybody is treated equally and just because their famous it doesn 't make them entitled .Miley
Nearly 66% said they needed to lose weight, while half of them were not overweight at all. Teen magazines such as Seventeen and Teen Vogue talk about how to look ‘slim’ and ‘sexy.’ Heavy readers, that get addicted to them, usually engage in unhealthy weight control behaviors. Advertising is found to be the main source of unrealistic body types.
The hidden reality of celebrities makes people go crazy and it is a way for them to become more people and earn more money. They are using harmful ways to gain fame and money. Celebrities aren’t the right people to be role models because –they misuse their social media, spend their money the wrong way,
Negative impact of celebrities on youth Celebrities have a great impact on teenagers, which is a considerable problem nowadays. We have all been witnessing unacceptable behavior by teenagers and children as well, however it is most likely to be labeled as “they are teenagers, they will grow out of it sooner or later”, but such behavior just showed up in our generation, whereas it did not exist in our parent’s and grandparent’s generations. Such a problem might not affect the society in the meantime but it definitely will be affected in the long term when this generation takes over the decision-making role. Unfortunately teenagers have an easy access to the social media where all the news of celebrities is widely spread in all the social media
