Martian Chronicles “The Martian Chronicles” is a book that talks about many social commentaries that are still talked about today. The book was written right after the end of world war 2, a time of change. Even though the book is science fiction, many parts of current social commentary is still described across the whole book. In “The Martian Chronicles”, the idea of nuclear warfare is talked about multiple times and takes a huge part on why humans leave earth. It also talks about new technology and how it might be a huge part of the future. Bradbury, so do the advancements in technology. Lastly, another social commentary Bradbury talks about in his book is Censorship. The censorship of books

In one of the most interesting chapters in the book, a man named Stendahl, was angered by the banning of books on earth. To Stendahl, it was surprising how some people knew about Edgar Allen Poe because of how all his books were burned 30 years before. Stendhal made a house that was replicated from one of Edgar Allen Poe’s books called “The fall of the house of usher”. Bradbury uses this chapter to show what censorship of books can do. Take away people's imagination and creativity. In the book, the great fire in the 1970s is what took books away from humans on earth. Stendhal states, “How could I expect you to know blessed Mr. Poe? He died a long while ago, before Lincoln. All of his books were burned in the Great Fire. …show more content…
People like Stendahl aren't happy because of what happened to books in the Great Fire. It took peoples fantasy away and basically took away their freedom. In current times, books are still being censored at places like schools where children learn. Every year in the US, more books are banned from schools, denying some students from learning different topics. In Smithsonian magazine, an article states, “Between July 2021 and June 2022, the report—Banned in the USA: The Growing Movement to Censor Books in Schools —found 2,532 instances of individual bans, which covered 1,648 unique books.”(Feldman2). So even after decades, books getting banned are still on rise. Just like books being banned in “The Martian Chronicles.” The US is taking away books that can potentially teach young individuals about important topics. Something that was common 70 years ago is still happening
In the beginning of the novel, the author, Ray Bradbury, introduced us to a world where books were forbidden. Guy Montag, a fireman, did not help save burning homes instead he burnt them. In this futuristic way of thinking, everyday life revolved around television and people thought books brought unhappiness therefore they sent firemen out to burn homes that contain books. Montag thoroughly enjoyed watching the seemingly meaningless books turn to ashes.
He does things that he normally wouldn’t do to find out why they burn books. Technology creates an illusion that people are happy. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 author Ray Bradbury creates the idea that technology censors happiness, this becomes clear when they start getting deeper in the novel. A world with just technology and without books
In society today, people often block out negative things to stay happy. “ It didn’t take a scientist to figure out that grump people make others feel lousy and feeling lousy makes them less productive” says the St. Petersburg Times. Blocking out negative things will cause the people around you to be happier. In the book, banning books was a normal thing for them. Instead of the firemen putting out fires, they start them when someone is withholding books.
(SIP B) The reason for the banning of books is later explained by one of the novel’s key adversaries, Beatty, who demonstrates one of the society’s fallacies. (STEWE 1) The books are avoided and burned in order to prevent dispute. Beatty clarifies, “we must all be alike.
Everything went on in the tomb-like houses at night now,”(2). Through this quote, Bradbury presents the idea that society no longer values its writers, and by extension knowledge or imagination for that matter. This shows that it is adamant to be cautioned against new technology because so-called advancement can destroy a society's
In the book, their government is controlling them to dislike and think all bad about books. In our society, our government is banning some books, and they want us to do and think certain things as
In many societies over the years, books have been banned for many reasons. Especially in Montag’s society, from the book “Fahrenheit 451” Where they have gone as far as making all books illegal to posses. Let's talk about how they got to that point, and why they feel that books are dangerous, and why they shouldn’t have done what they did. Books are not dangerous, there are far more books that give good ideas, rather than bad ones, therefore books should not be destroyed, or all books banned because one is bad. Books are in fact good for people to read, because it boost brain activity.
“The woman on the porch reached out with contempt to them all and struck the kitchen house against the railing” (Bradbury, 40). This peaks Montag’s interest in books, and even prompts him to steal one from the burning house to add to his hidden collection. Nevertheless the harms of censorship are eventually recognized, people become curious and want to know what 's being hidden from
Plus, in an interview, he mentioned the book burnings in China, Germany and Russia. The book was published eight years after the World War II, not really far from the time when book-burnings were an important part of the national socialism in Germany(Interesting Literature, 2013). In the interview, he also talked about the book burnings in the McCarthy era. In that period, 30,000 books which were written by communist sympathizers or contained pro communist themes, were banned and removed from the shelves of public libraries. He was widely upset with this and said, “Anything that touches the library, touches me(YouTube, 2011).”
Books are an essential way to gain knowledge whether they are controversial or not. Thousands of books have been banned from public libraries and schools due to being deemed ‘inappropriate’ by parents, administrators, or religious leaders. Whether Americans should ban books in public libraries and schools is an often debated topic. This censorship of books is dangerous, as it restricts the American people's’ ability to access information, leaving Americans ignorant. Historically, banning books is not a new practice.
The aspects of this society that Bradbury appears to detest the most is burning books to please everyone. He shows this by giving Beatty a big speech talking
“American citizens who care about the improvement of education are urged to join students, teachers, librarians, administrators, boards of education, and professional and scholarly organizations in support of the students’ right to read” (The Students Right to Read). Citizens should be allowed to stand up if they believe books should not be banned. It is important that writers should be able to have their books out to the public without getting banned. “Challengers often employ a definition that maintains that banning materials is the only true form of censorship,”(Knox 740). Censorship of books is common and a real problem.
Every child deserves a proper education. Banned books are depriving students of a well rounded, culturally aware, literary education because of the culture that is discarded, the history that is being withheld, and the education that young people could get through these banned books. The point of history is to learn from it and learn from others mistakes, but how can we do that if we are not allowed to learn it. As teachers shouldn’t you be teaching us how to make judgment calls like understanding that Mark Twain was a racist, but a man of his time and that doesn’t change him being an amazing writer. We cannot learn things such as that if we cannot even read most of Mark Twain’s books.
The books are normally banned for good intention or causes to protect the public, especially the young audience from controversial ideas. Reference to
