Everyone has an opinion, and everyone has the right to voice their opinions. The right to express opinions is a blessing that Americans have fought tirelessly for over the course of many years. However, society is changing and so are our rights. Feelings are being hurt, things are becoming “politically incorrect”, and restrictions are being enforced. Ray Bradbury’s commentary on society in Fahrenheit 451 discusses issues that applied to the American culture of the 1950’s and even our culture today in the 21st century. Whether it be the change of perspective on marriage, or the censorship that is now occurring in our society, our world is changing, and Ray Bradbury has a lot to say about it. The society of Fahrenheit 451 is a society based on avoiding offensive words and logical ideas. At first it was just the task of destroying only the impertinent works of literature, but over time it became a simple mission of destroying anything that had any kind of knowledge or meaning in it. Thinking it was making the society “more even”, the banning of books occurred. The banning of books might seem like a good idea at first, but when the source of information has been ridded of, then the quality of individual opinions dramatically lessons. Book burning not only occurred in the society of Fahrenheit 451, but is also occurring in the world today. The notorious burning of books by the Nazi terrorist group in the 1930’s was one example that has been cited today as the society Ray Bradbury had described. While that reign of terror is over, we now have the group Isis to take their place. They have destroyed entire libraries with rare books and significant manuscripts because they did not like what was said. Because no one dared to stop Isis when it was only a small, insignificant group, they have gained control and power.
