Philosophy of Art
Censorship and regulation is all around us in the world we live in now. The current way society is made and built pretty much anything you post online or even any statement you make is bound to offend or brush someone the wrong way. Which puts many artists in a bit of a jam when people argue that we should be able to go out and ban any sort of art that we feel offends us or makes us feel uncomfortable. This is simply silly and arbitrary. Let’s it face most great art in the world today consists of “sex drugs and rock and roll” which is how it’s always been and will stay. No one wants to read a sappy story about finding love or a depressing book that they’ve seen and heard a thousand times.

This was the first idea of censorship of art because Plato thought all art is bad for a society and it should be banned and artists should no longer make art at all. But then Plato falls back on his idea of censorship and has mixed feelings when he said that crazed stories and poetry are better and more interesting to read than reading something a technical writer wrote. The main point of this statement being Plato himself could not come up with a good counter argument to stick for his stand on censorship and neither has anyone else to this very day because it’s simply arbitrary. It makes no sense to censor any art no matter how crazy and gross and offensive it may …show more content…
Another form of art that some feel should be censored is some novels that are out there like Catcher and the Rye, Harry Potter series, and To Kill a MockingBird again this is just to name a few that are out there. People for censorship mainly want it as a way of protecting their kids and to protect the people who can’t handle those types of art. The main reason for that is people are sometimes afraid that if people play, watch, or see these works they might make them snap and try and imitate what they’ve seen or read in real life. A new research American Psychological Association (APA) has shown that children and young adults who play first person shooter games have been more prone to aggression but not necessarily criminal activity. The same can be said for racy novels that depict killing and
Could you imagine just scrolling through your phone one day and finding a news article saying that musicals have been censored and banned? Or flip flops? It would be very bizarre to have to go through life after experencing something that was now censored. What is even more weird is the affect it could have on the world though. It is strange to think about how such a small, normal thing could be taken away and have a massive affect on how the world works.
There are different types of censorship like schools banning books and people vandalizing art they deem as offensive. Certain cities must create an insurance policy and warning for artists because so many people destroy their work. Under the article Vandalism by Pauline Barrier, she states that in the United States, “All art shown under a Council's auspices… should be insured so that there is some sort of way in which to help artists repair their work if damage does occur” (2). It is terrible that for someone to express their art freely they must have it extra protected and insured. Censoring the works of very imaginative artists destroys the uniqueness and individuality our society holds.
This, however, is both a good and bad thing. Certain books like the Anarchists Cookbook written by William Powell, is currently banned in America for good reasons. This book itself contains instructions to manufacture explosives, as well as drugs such as LSD. This was a good use of censorship as allowing a book that teaches the public these things shouldn’t be allowed on the streets. On the other hand, in the case of Board of Education v. Pico (1982), the supreme court ruled that the school has authority to monitor the education of the students and can remove information that is educationally unsuitable for the students (McLaughlin 9).
As previously stated, Ray Bradbury deals with some issues of censorship in his book Fahrenheit 451. In this novel the entire population is controlled and censored and things are terrible because of it. As said in the book. “We are living in a time when flowers are trying to live off flowers, instead of growing on food rain and black loam.”. It means we need to read books and learn to truly grow instead of just living off each other.
It wasn’t until the early twentieth century that the laws and legal rights in America regarding the censorship and banning of literature was addressed. The Constitution of the United States of America defines through the First Amendment that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” (U.S. Constitution). Despite the law specifically outlined here, declaring the freedom of speech for Americans, censorship continues to be a reoccurring theme in our culture. Group that trigger and support censorship range anywhere from the government to small private
Take the shot from the weapon. ’”(Bradbury 55-56) ; This quote not only is dealing with censorship, but the fact that society has standards for everyone to be the same. Some things in our world get censored because it’s different and it doesn’t fit what people think is cool, cute or funny, etc. “ ‘Cram them full of noncombustible data, chock them so damned full of ‘facts’ they feel stuffed, but absolutely ‘brilliant’ with information.
According to these points, censoring literature is both immoral and wrong, and the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America backs this up. The Amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” The freedom of speech aspect of this statement refers to the conveying of a person’s personal opinion on a public scale. This idea is often specified as the criticism of the government, but it can also be interpreted as the public admittance of one’s personal beliefs on any subject (Freedom). That admittance
Censorship is found in books, media, or any other form of expression. Censorship is powerful. Everyone should be aware of censorship. Censorship is a theme conveyed in the works of many, such as, I am Very Real by Kurt Vonnegut, Harrison
Censorship is dangerous, and too much of it can lead to an inevitable destruction of our
There is a fine line between things that the public should have under consideration when it comes to what should be censored and what has the right to uncensored things . In my opinion, the only limitation I think should be under consideration is the censorship of public nudity. One should not be able to breastfeed in public, have intercourse with another, running around naked, or “freeing the nipple”. These situations can occur without someone knowing so it is not one ’s fault to block that image as they casually pass the person down the street.
Rough Draft Essay #2 What do you think when you hear something has been banned or censored? Most of us think this “Oh that’s great” because it had content that wasn’t okay for people to see. Today in modern society books are banned/censored because people see them as not appropriate for people to see. The banning/censoring books isn’t the best idea because some books are banned just because they have content that is seen a “mature” or “illegal”.
By censoring critical literature via the very governmental organizations created to do such things, the government deprives its citizens of intellectual freedom, development, and speech leading to a dysfunctional educational system that fosters a biased and discriminatory society. The concept of censorship has a long history which commenced in Rome, Greece, and China during pre-modern times before its inheritance by the United States during the 19th
There are many reasons why various organizations and people are censoring different kinds of topics; some people say it’s the right thing to do and others think its controversial to the first amendment.
Should art be censored? Throughout history, many have felt the need to remove or suppress material that they consider to be morally or politically objectionable, such as books, films, or other materials. They feel that these materials should not be taught in schools or shown in public museums. These people believe no one should be subjected to something that may be against their teachings or beliefs. Others, however, do not feel that these or any works of art should be suppressed.
Salmon Rushdie’s essay, ‘On Censorship’, is unique in it’s use of rhetoric. Rushdie uses a conversational approach and an extended metaphor to persuade readers to follow his argument against censorship in writing. He begins by making his argument basic. Using simple language, Rushdie tells us “censorship is the thing that stops you doing what you want to do”(Rushdie, On Censorship).
