The story, Naming of Names depicts a “New Frontier” type of people whose goal is to stay alive until the war on Earth is over, the short story takes the readers on a trip with Harry and his family and the struggles of trying to restart their lives on Mars. Things don’t turn out the best for the New Frontiersmen when the civilization begins to change, some of these changes include golden eyes, darker skin, thinner and taller bodies, another one of these changes are the people begin speaking in the ancient Martian tongue, one of the last changes these New Frontiersman run into is the change in their diet and clothing. The science fiction, Naming of Names by Ray Bradbury reveals change and how humans learn to adapt to different ways of life.
The first piece of evidence to prove the thesis is the humans on Mars are changing a substantial part of their body, this includes their eye and skin color, and they are also becoming a shade or two browner and start becoming very thin and taller. To support this claim Ray Bradbury states, “Lying abed, Mr.Bittering felt his bones shifted, shaped, melted like gold. His wife, lying beside him, was dark from many sunny afternoons. Dark she was, and golden, burnt almost black

This can be proven by the change in which the people eat, become healthier, thinner, and don’t want to wear their old clothing anymore like Mr.Bittering’s daughter, Laura. To prove the thesis exponentially more the author states, “Mr.Bittering glanced away. “I’ll come and get it next week.”They turned to their daughter. “What about your New York dresses?” The bewildered girl stared. “Why, I don’t want them anymore.”. This proves the thesis more because it shows how the old human clothing wouldn’t seem normal for a new Martian to wear. It also shows how they show different trains of thought now, they only want to live and not have fun doing
His grandmother responds, “If nothing matters, there’s nothing to save” (461). He seems to appeal to the readers feelings of compassion for his grandmother’s story to get the audience to agree with him. Even though it is not his only mode of argumentation he relies primarily on his emotional appeals to make his point. Next, his statistical evidence was incomplete. For example, “Eating factory-farmed animals--which is to say virtually every piece of meat sold in supermarkets and prepared in restaurants--is almost certainly the single worst thing that humans can do to the environment” (457).
Based on the data gathered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average American consumes more than 150 pounds of sugar and sweeteners each year. When broken down, that’s 22 teaspoons of sugar consumed per day. Americans don’t even realize they’re eating this tremendous amount of sugar. In the documentary Hungry for Change, director Laurentine Ten Bosch uses rhetorical appeals to advise that the listeners consider what they are consuming and point out the dangers of sugar and processed foods in everyday diets. While the statistics provided throughout the documentary contributed to the overall effectiveness, the use of emotional appeal was excessive and over-dramatized.
Another way the novel reflects Bradbury’s life is how society went under numerous lifestyle changes. After World War II, big items such as appliances and televisions became more affordable to the middle class, causing such an increase in economic prosperity. There was a change in music from the country-folk genre to a more jazz and rock and roll type. According to Livinghistoryfarm.org, many people were migrating North for jobs, and they brought their culture and music with them. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, there was a huge amount of money being spent on new appliances.
Pollan begins explaining that all the scientists have their own causes for western diseases, but the common factor among them is the western diet. After talking about the contradicting scientific theories, Pollan goes on to show the benefit the food industry and the health industry has because of it. Pollan starts to say that the health industry also wants to profit off Theories perversely talked about. Pollan points out how every time a new health kick comes out the food and heath industry immediately try to jump on the
Throughout Bradbury’s book, The Martian Chronicles, a theme of ignorance is displayed. Ignorance can be found in almost each one of the short stories. The citizens of Earth are ignorant to the truth of what really does happen to the expeditions. The Martians have a hard time believing there is life on Earth and vice versa. Banning literature is a way for the government to keep its people living in ignorance.
The human mind is one of the greatest enigmas that exists on our planet, we are constantly amazed by what it is capable of, whether is be for better or for worse. Creativity has always been seen by our society as a positive personal attribute and it is encouraged that everyone experiments with the potential of their minds to see what they are capable of and what the enjoy. While it is important to test the potential of our minds and our creativity, it can become detrimental to ourselves in some ways if not managed properly. One of the many joys that humans have the right and the ability to experience is to let our minds wander and imagine various parallel realities without having to pay a single dollar, but if we get too wrapped up in these
Bradbury and Poe both write enticing stories. For Some they would choose the more darker side of literature that is “The Cask of Amontillado.” Others prefer a simpler text with a real world problem imbedded into to the story such as “Chrysalis”. The stark contrast found in both stories cause the atmosphere to change between the readers.
According to Pollan, the focus of society on the nutrients in food has not helped the obesity epidemic in the Western world. According to Pollan, “The industrial food supply was promptly reformulated
Michael Pollan’s Escape from the Western Diet connects well with what Mary Maxfield says in her article. Both Pollan and Maxfield talk about the ways that dieting is taking over American people’s healths and causing them to become even unhealthier. In Mary Maxfield’s argument she talks about how people believe everything that diet industries say, even though they know that the information they give you is false. This connects really well with what Michael Pollan talks about in his article, which is that people know that these theories that are used for the Western diet are not accurate, but yet they still decide to use the Western diet to help them become healthier.
You're walking down the empty street. No one has walked down this road in years. The people aren't gone, but there are more ghosts like than people, just floating through this world, but not you. You are still human, but that might not be the safest choice. Suddenly bright flashes of light wash over you.
Opposers would say the theme of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is people are scared of change but things always change. Ray Bradbury writes, “A time to break down, and a time to build up.” This evidence is coming from Montag’s thoughts from him and the outsiders are heading towards the destroyed city to make it new. They want to change the way things are run and have literature be apart of everyday life instead of it being illegal like it was before. This theme doesn’t work for Fahrenheit 451 though because the cause of the change is people standing up for what they believe in.
People can be good at many things, and sometimes they are the best at those things. I believe that Ray Bradbury, focused on multiple craft moves in The Veldt such as dialogue, personification, and flashbacks to show that he can be one of the best, when it comes to adding craft moves into his writing. He made the writing more interesting and described and showed the moments in different ways. He also used many different craft moves throughout the story, but I think that these three, dialogue, personification, and flashbacks are the most important, and I believe that without these craft moves the story wouldn’t have as big of an impact on the reader as it did with them. Ray Bradbury used dialogue to show how the characters are feeling at that exact moment, and is shown throughout the story to show interactions between characters in that moment in time.
In the short story, “The Pedestrian,” written by Ray Bradbury, an interesting man had decided to go for a walk. The main character, Leonard Mead, seemed to be foreign to the rest of the city, as he was the only one outside in the late hours of the day. Nothing had seemed out of the ordinary, until Mead began to describe his current situation. The protagonist was placed in a future setting, living in the year 2053. He had described life to be very advanced although people in the city spent a majority of their time inside their homes.
The invasion of Mars by Earthlings in “The Martian Chronicles” by Ray Bradbury causes both Martians and Earthlings to suffer from several different consequences. There are many instances in “The Martian Chronicles” where these consequences are shown indirectly. Some fatal consequences formed by the invasion of Mars include innocent deaths, the spread of insanity, sorrow, loneliness, confusion, chaos, and the growth of an unwanted second Earth on Mars. Overall, since the 1st expedition of Earthlings traveling to Mars, things have digressed.
