Chapter 16 America's Gilded Age

The time period from when the Second Industrial Revolution was beginning, up until President McKinley’s assassination in 1901, is known as the Gilded Age. After the Civil War, many people headed out West to pursue agriculture, and many immigrants moved to urban areas to acquire jobs in industrial factories. It is in this context that farmers and industrial workers had to respond to industrialization. Two significant ways farmers and industrial workers responded to industrialization in the Gilded Age, were creating the Populist Party and the American Federation of Labor (AFL).

What did the gilded age consist of? The gilded age was a time period that took place during the late 19th century and early 20th century and it consisted of economic prosperity for many Americans while for others economic growth was not so prosperous. The industry was expanding significantly and that changed the American society. The American industry boomed; consequently, a division between the workers and the owners grew and that created what is known as a social divide. The social divide was the division of the rich from the poor.

The era commonly known the “Gilded Age” received this descriptive name for several reasons. One reason the term “gilded” was used was to describe how society appeared shiny and unblemished from the outside, however, the inside did not reflect the same condition. Jacob Riis’ novel, How the Other Half Lives, written amid the Gilded Age in 1890, explored the hardships of the unappreciated populations that embody the unpolished appearance responsible for the name, “the Gilded Age.” Riis used photojournalism to uncover the realities of living in the cramped tenements of New York City along with the causes of exploitation of these inhabitants. In a time between the beginning of the of the Second Industrialization Revolution and the end of the imperialism movement, there were many changes in America. It is in this context that American ideals changed in the Gilded Age. Farmers and industrial workers responded to industrialization in the Gilded Age from 1865-1900 by forming organizations that allowed for their voices to be recognized and by influencing political parties to help get national legislation passed. In the book “The Gilded Age and Progressive Era” William explained that the introduction of railroads brought about the expansion of the United States. The late 19th century is commonly referred to as the “Gilded Age”. A time of luxury and success, for some at least. For others, this was a time of struggle, hard work, and new beginnings. Child-workers are one group that did not experience the so-called “luxury” of this epoch. Our story begins with a poor child-worker named Arabella, or Bella.

In the 1850's into the early 1900's everybody was trying to improve life through becoming consumers, mass culture, and entertainment. This time period was when the people of America really got an identity for ourselves. This time period was known as The Gilded Age. Mark Twain wrote a book in 1873 named “The Gilded Age.” Twain looked at the American society as having a rotten core but covered with gold paint, or gilded.

The Civil War is a historical consciousness with a revolution from 177-1783. This was a war that determined the nation. It was the war that declared that all men was created equal with equal rights to liberty. According to Roark, J. L., Johnson, M. P., Cohen, P. C., Stage, S., & Hartmann, S. M. The Gilded Age was a period in which enormous economic growth and ostentatious was exhibited. During this period of the nineteenth century this group of entrepreneurs developed the working.

The Gilded Age. A point in history where industries took advantage of their workers and lied to the government about it. Men, women, and children alike were extremely undervalued. Whether it was low pay, long hours, or unsafe work environments people in this time were not being treated as they should have. In theory as years go by things will change.

Towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, America had experienced booming industrialization, urbanization and economic growth which brought about many technological advancements; this era was known as the Gilded age. Despite the technological accomplishments and economic success during the Gilded age, the wealth gained by industries was do to the unfair treatment of workers, by giving them long hours and paying them low wages, employers and owners kept most of the profit while workers suffered. Progressivism is unquestionably hard to define. Nonetheless, many historians have endeavored to define and sought out how it embarked. Every person will have different perspectives, thus each of the historians will have different outlooks of how they view the findings and what they assume progressivism is. Therefore, this essay will work to exemplify what I think triggered the progressive movement in the United States. Gilded Age caused many problems to outbreak in its era, such as, outlandish fortunes and poverty, incongruous meat production, flux of foreign immigration, ecological demolition, etc.
