The Evolution of Science and Sports- Unit 9
1. Share some information about the science behind your sport or recreation of choice.
My recreation of choice is camping. I have been camping my whole life. Even when my mom was pregnant with me. As I became older I wanted to start a tradition with my children by going camping every year. Over the years, we try to camp at different camp sites to enhance our experiences. The science behind camping includes many different science experiments, such as building camp fires, hiking nature trails, finding your way, the wood you use to burn, how to use the suns energy to heat your own water and even cooking marshmallows. Hiking nature trails provides you with many opportunities to explore science. “With a bit of advanced

Camping is known to improve the quality of life, create lasting memories, and offer peace, love, and a fun adventure.
2. How can you categorize the scientific information that you learned about your sport/recreation? Does it involve physics, chemistry, and/or biology, for example?
You can categorize camping as biology, physics, and chemistry. When you go camping and experience the outdoors, you learn about water, fire, conservation, biomes, ecosystems, and the food web and food chains. While camping, you use biology because being exposed to only natural light, can synch your circadian clock. Camping can reset your bodies clock. When we decrease the use of electrical lighting, and experience natural light, our bodies will get a better quality of sleep and our natural circadian rhythms will no longer stray from us as they do using electrical lighting. Camping uses physics when you make a campfire, especially if your
American football has quickly become America’s favorite sport, nothing like turning on the TV on a Saturday or Sunday and watching some football with friends or family. Whether you love it or hate it there is no denying that football has become one of the most popular sports on the planet. Despite the controversy surrounding the dangers of football, it has still developed into a multi-billion dollar industry. Pretty much everyone has heard of football or the stars that surround it, but few people know how football got its start. Football is believed to have descended from the ancient Greek game of harpaston.
The central idea of the article Essay: Why sports history is American history by, Mark Naison is women and black athletes had to fight to get their opportunities in sports. In the article it states, “Black people were not allowed to play most professional sports.” This explains one reason why Black American athletes couldn’t play professional sports. Another statement in the article says, “For most of the 1900’s, women were told sports were just for men.” This explains one reason why women couldn’t play any sports.
When people analyze and evaluate the history of sports from a technological aspect, games have tremendously been influenced where gathering content is attainable expeditiously with the click of a mouse. The ability to gather information so rapidly in today’s sports market is something that was unheard of about 20-30 years ago. Furthermore, technology just doesn’t influence sports; it has an impact on everything in society. For example, music has been recorded for over centuries when technology was an afterthought. There were no computers, digital mixing systems or the latest technological equipment available to past musicians during the 1920’s or 1930’s.
Do genetics really matter when discussing a person’s ability to perform in their respective sport? Or is it the amount of hours that a person has put into the craft? In “The Sports Gene” by David Epstein, the author attempts to answer this gene vs. practice question. Epstein does this by including examples of high jumpers, differences between average and world champion chess players, as well as what scientists call the ‘big bang’ of body types, to name a few.
I personally believe that we have control of how are destiny will work for us. We can do the right things in life, or do the not so good things that sabotage the way our destiny is suppose to work out for us. In The Sports Gene, by David Epstein, Donald Thomas was led to his destiny by a bet from a current track member who did high jump. He then found out that he was naturally good at high jump, because of his giant achilles tendon. But in Macbeth, by Shakespeare, Macbeth sabotaged the way he was going to become king of Scotland.
To many people in our modern world, when you think about the 1920s history in America, most would think about women’s rights or prohibition. Known as “The Golden Age of Sports”, this time period was a time of change and record breaking. With the role of playing a professional sport, many athletes were seen as a role model or somewhat of a God, “ A gentleman never competes for money, directly or indirectly. Make no mistake about.

Sports hold a unique place in human history, serving as a powerful reflection of the societies, backgrounds, and cultures in which they are played. They transcend languages and ideologies, uniting people through a shared passion for competition, skill, and athletic prowess. The long 20th century witnessed a remarkable transformation in the world of sports, forever shaping the concept of sport into what we know today. During the 1920s, many people had enough money to spend on entertainment and a lot of people spent the money on sports. In the 1920s, there was many sports including boxing, baseball and football.
American Sociologist, Jonathan R. Cole, in his article, “Why Sports and Elite Academics Do Not Mix,” (2017), argues that highly selective colleges should withdraw from the NCAA to form their own league because these universities are not attempting to create national championship programs. He supports his claim by first describing the revenue that the NCAA receives from monopolizing college sports teams, then explains that these NCAA athletes are involved in scandalous interests due to their lack of quality education and leadership, then reveals the extent a college will go to ensure their athletes can participate in the NCAA, and finally imparts the deprivation that these universities have with diversity of their student’s talents. Cole’s purpose
Sports were as popular as ever in the 1950s. Baseball and boxing were huge, while football and golf were growing. The 50s produced its share of remarkable athletes, stellar teams and history making sports events that grabbed everyone’s attention. The 1950s were also a time of comfortable prosperity and the economy was back on track.
1970s and Sports The 70s were a time of disco, polyester suites, pet rocks, but also a time that many felt self-absorbed and challenging.
