It 's the final day of the game, Rainsford spots Zaroff in the distance, Rainsford runs and dives into a bush, Zaroff senses that Rainsford is close by, He spots him, Rainsford ducks while whispering “nerves...nerves...” Zaroff shoots and narrowly misses Rainsford in the thick bush, “Next time rainsford...next time..” says Zaroff. Rainsford stands up and simply replies “Oh,here won’t be a next time” “Oh.. really…” Zaroff replies in a confused tone. Rainsford makes a quick getaway while yelling “Try me!” Rainsford and Zaroff both run wild and fast in opposite directions, leading into a circle Rainsford couldn’t see Zaroff right around the corner, both are running and they collide at a great speed, In the dusty collision they fail to realize they both landed right into quicksand. …show more content…
Don’t do it..This cannot be..Its not fair..” says Zaroff in a weak and shaky voice, “Oh.. It 's very fair.. and You’re too
If I find him, the general smiled, he loses” (Connell 5). In this section of the story, Zaroff is explaining the rules of the game to Rainsford. When Zaroff says “If I find him….. he loses,” you can highly infer by this that when he says “loses” he means they die, so he’s practically saying that is Rainsford loses, he dies. Typically, when one knows they are going to die, they do what they can to save themselves, which is what Rainsford did.
As Rainsford is battling the quicksand, “then as he stepped forward, his foot sank into the ooze. He tried to wrench it back, but the muck sucked viciously at his foot as if it were a giant leech. With a violent effort, he tore his feet loose. He knew where he was now. Death Swamp and its quicksand.”
Second off, Zaroff's game is unfair; he knows his way around the island. While explaining the rules, “I suggest that you avoid the big swamp in the southeast corner of the island. We call it Death Island.” He knows his way around the island and can easily trap Rainsford if he catches him in a dead end. Another quote, after Rainsford fell off the boat, “Dense jungle came down to the very edge of the cliffs.
That indicates that he had given up on trying to fight and wanted to work with Georg to try to get help. In “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford and Zaroff were enemies from the beginning ‘till the end. Towards the end, Zaroof told Rainsford that he had won but “Rainsford did not smile. "I am still a beast at bay," he said, in a low, hoarse voice. "
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford fits the category of Zaroff’s ideal animal to hunt, because Rainsford displays the attribute to reason by being able to make many life saving decisions throughout the story. Rainsford has the ability to reason from the very beginning of the story, because he was able to remain calm to make a life saving decision in an unnerving situation, which proves that he fits the quarry for Zaroff to hunt. As he was in the water, he recalls the gunshots he heard while he was still on the yacht, “they had come from the right, and doggedly he swam in that direction, swimming with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength” (Connell 14). Whereas most people would have panicked in the situation
Zaroff had this theory that Rainsford was trying to kill him and he was right but for a good reason. Rainsford walked up to the
When Rainsford hears Zaroff say this, he realizes that Zaroff is a man hunter. So, Zaroff gave Rainsford a head start into the forest and then he would go hunt him. Rainsford had many challenges ahead of him, the top challenge he wanted to achieve was to stay alive, the next one was to survive in the forest. Day after day Zaroff was getting closer and closer to Rainsford, but Rainsford had a plan, he would build a trap to capture/kill Zaroff. Whenever one of the traps failed, his new challenge was to make a trap and hope that Zaroff would take the bait.
He is now not a hunter, but the hunted. He must now face the struggle of trying to hide, run, and defend himself from getting killed from Zaroff. But what Zaroff dosen`t know , is that Rainsford is a lot smarter than
Here in the story General Zaroff is injured by a trap that Rainsfords set. “But he was not quick enough, the dead tree crashed down and struck the general.(232) This quote shows Irony when in the start of the hunt General Zaroff thought that this was going to be an easy kill and he could continue on. Throughout the story Zaroff and Rainsford both exert arrogance.
Also, General Zaroff is an extreme hunter and doesn’t find pleasure in hunting regular animals. Zaroff says the most dangerous game is humans because they have the ability to reason. Rainsford is going to be hunted and is given a certain amount of time to survive. Moreover, while Rainsford is being hunted Zaroff
In the end, Rainsford surprises him, by hiding in the Zarroff’s bedroom and killing him. Even though they seem different, they are pretty much the same exact thing. Both trying to get killed by an evil person, and they kill the antagonist in the
What is external conflict? External conflict is a struggle outside of a character. A commonly used example of external conflict is exhibited in the story of Cinderella. She was stuck in the household of her evil stepmother, and was not allowed to leave her home. Cinderella wanted to attend a ball; however, her stepmother would not let her go.
The narrator says, “Rainsford held his breath. The general’s eye had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring”(13). Rainsford is scared to death when the general is hunting him because this is a real life or death situation. General Zaroff is pulling tricks on Rainsford to try to get him to come down from the tree.
Throughout the story the reader sees how Zaroff “plays” with Rainsford as he hunts him and not once does Zaroff think he will lose to Rainsford. This is a clear example of the theme to never underestimate your opponent skills or the underdog may overtake you. Connell illustrates this theme through foreshadowing, irony, and, man vs. man. To help us visualize, foreshadowing shows how Rainsford, being the underdog, will overtake Zaroff who underestimates Rainsford. Although Rainsford is not seen as being the weaker link, Rainsford showed he did not pity those below him: “‘Who cares how a jaguar feels all they understand is fear.’
" Get ready, General Zaroff. " The general made one of his deepest bows. "I see," he said. "Splendid!
