In Linda Sue Park’s “A Long Walk to Water” , the main character, Salva encounters several challenges. Through his longing, leadership, and tenacity. Salva has lost his parents, sisters, and brothers because of the Sudanese civil war. Salva is a strong, determined, and knowledgeable person. Furthermore, by the end of this essay you’ll be inspired and touched.
Salva survives plenty of his challenges through his longings. In chapter 9 Salva breaks his toenail on a rock. The texts confirms “Each time, Salva would think of his family and his village… at a time.” (54) This shows that since Salva is thinking about his values he wants to continue to walk even more. Salva hears of his father’s condition but cannot reach him. Salva, Chris, and Louise spend hours on the phone with different agencies/offices trying to help Salva go to Sudan, it

Salva’s Uncle is murdered right in front of him. He perseveres and fends for himself. The text states “When the men had finished their looting, they picked up Uncle's gun… the men ran away.” (63). This means that Salva learns to move on and thrives by himself. A little later the refugee camp where Salva lives closes. Salva goes to another refugee camp in order to have food and all the necessary things for survival. The text declares “They are driving us back to sudan, Salva thought.” (75) This means that Salva is willing to take a long journey as long as it means he’ll help others and get them/himself there safe. In the first chapter gunfire rings out at Salva’s school and near his school. Salva ran into the bush to escape the gunfire. The text claims “He ran until he could not run anymore. Then he walked. For hours, until the sun was nearly gone from the sky.”(9) This means that although Salva is afraid, he still makes a decision to persevere in order save his life. Salva keeps going no matter what happens, he is clearly a very wise and fortunate
Uncle told him “A step at a time. One problem at a time-just figure out this problem.” This helped Salva get through many many other obstacles as well. Another example happens later in the book when Uncle dies and the rest of the group starts treating Salva badly. Salva perseveres and manages to deal with the leftover scraps that they grudgingly give him.
At this point in the story, his uncle was the only person who he was close with and he was murdered right in front of Salva’s face. Now Salva doesn’t have any family, friends, and he’s not sure how his birth family is doing. So, he must survive and live off of people who don’t like him to get to a refugee camp that kicks him out, due to the instability of their government. After that horrid event, he was forced to watch his friends be murdered to get rid of the refugees. Although many horrible events happened in Salva’s life up to this point in the story, he will continue to go on and to be
Sacrificing something is really hard to do. What if you had to sacrifice your family, food and water. Some people would say “How would you Survive.” In the novel A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park a young boy named Salva Dut had to flee his home in South Sudan because of war. Salva has no food, water and doesn't have his family.
One days, Salva uncle decided to return back to the refugee camps in Sudan to fight. But before he get to the camps he was killed. Salva and others people move to a new camps. It’s not easy to get into new camps because they are in war zone. When they go to the new camp they don’t have enough food so they were so hungry and tried.
I think that his journey to Ethiopia will go smoother because now he has a friend by his side. Both Marial and Salva, both have someone to not only rely on, but also just have a friend to talk to on the journey. In the book, they even work well together because it says that they found a bee hive together causing them to not only get honey, but to get the honeycomb. Together the honeycomb and honey are delicious, and can last 3-4 days to eat if you eat it slowly, which Salva did. Marial is also without his family, so they are both worried about maybe never seeing their families again.
While Salva was walking with the group of Dinkas, he met a boy named Marial who is a lot like Salva. After walking with Marial in the group, he finds his Uncle who he has not seen for years. But Salva lost his
In the novel that Linda Sue Park had written; a Long Walk to Water. Tells a story of compassion, bravery, and a little bit of luck, during one of the worst times in Southern Sudan. Told from a perspective of a young boy named Salva. Moreover, throughout the book, Salva had many factors that made survival possible for him, they include; Marial, Uncle, some luck on the way. These are the factors that helped him survive, even when tomorrow did not seem possible.
Park writes, “Salva stared at her as panic rose inside of him. Why can’t I go with her?” (Park 18). The old woman who had previously been helping him, changes her mind for her own benefit and isn’t thinking about what he is going through. This connects to Wallace’s struggle in “This is Water”.
(pg 73) This shows that Salva is persevering because even though he hates the refugee camp, he
In Linda Sue Park’s novel A Long Walk to Water, demonstrates one of many true stories of many a Lost Boy. Salva an eleven year old had to flee from his village all alone because his village was attacked due to the Second Sudanese War that began in 1983. When Salva was at school and his village was being attacked,he was told not to go home, but into the bush, that's where his whole journey began. Salva had to show confidence, determination, and perseverance in order to survive in a difficult environment.
Throughout the novel Salva demonstrates determination by pushing himself to do his best and not give up on anything no mater what is going on. One instance where Salva showed determination is on page 65, paragraph 4. “Marial was gone. Uncle was gone, too, murdered by those Nuer men right before salva’s eyes. Marial and uncle were no longer by his side, and they never would be again, but salva knew that both of them would have wanted him to survive,to finish the trip and reach the itang refugee camp safely.
Imagine yourself trapped in a location where war and isolation are part of your everyday life. Are you prepared to walk miles through the dark nights of Africa, bare foot in search for protection and resources. Similarly in the novel “A Long Walk to Water” a young boy named Salva Mawien is struggling through the tough times of Sudan. As an eleven year old, getting drifted away from his beloved ones in just a matter time, the only answer to survive is to abandon home and flee. A life changing decision which gets him jumbled into more problems.
Salva gets water and does housework for the old woman he considers family. In the text it states “He worked hard so she would not send him away.” (18) Salva worked hard, to have a place to stay during the fighting. Salva helped with the boats so he could get over the river faster. The text explains “It was hard work running back and forth between those cutting and those weaving.”
Salva, a 11 year old boy, who was separated from his family while running away from school due to war and needs to get to safety. He had gone through many dangerous challenges such as getting honey from the honey bees , swimming in the lake of crocodiles, ect… but he was able to survive. The factors which made survival possible for Salva in “ A Long Walk To Water” was motivation, helpful people, and basic needs. These factors were helpful because it would prevent Salva from dying or becoming more lost than he already is. Motivation is one of the factor of survival for Salva.
“It’s not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” Charles Darwin once said. In order for Salva to survive, he needed some basic survival skills. The three I noticed were adaptability, mental toughness, and motivation. Here’s some examples of Salva using these skills throughout the story.
