Leo Tolstoy
“Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”
This is the famous opening line of the old Russian literary piece Anna Karenina.
In his interpretation the director Joe Wright will now bring these timeless characters, and their thought-provoking narrative back to life.
But who was Leo Tolstoy, the man behind the original story? This is the question we are answering in this article, in an attempt to bring further depth and understanding for those who choose to watch the film.

He found no such answers, but instead found that in his eyes the Christian church as an organised form of religion was limiting and corrupt. Instead he found his own beliefs and answers, which he shared through a publication called The Mediation.
The Orthodox church found these ideas highly controversial and Tolstoy was ejected from the church. He was even under watch by the secret police for a while.
His beliefs made him want to give his money away, an idea his wife was strongly opposed to. This put a great strain on their marriage, and ended with Tolstoy giving the copyrights, (and presumably also the royalties) of all his publications preceding 1882 away to her. After this he went on to write a number of other books, such as The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Father Sergius, and

Sigmund Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis explores the concept of a person’s behavior being controlled by their unconscious and conscious mind. Almost all of the literary works that exist tend to have a conflict that pertains to either the plot or the character. In Leo Tolstoy’s fiction novella “The Death of Ivan Ilyich”, he writes about the life of a fictional character named Ivan Ilyich and his conflicts that he deals with throughout his adulthood. Tolstoy specifically writes this novella in an interesting order by beginning the story after Ivan’s death and then continuing the story before his death. Another significant character in the story is Ivan’s son Vasya.
Vladimir Lenin read the writing of Karl Marx which inspired him to declare himself a Marxist. After participating in Marxist activities, he was exiled to Siberia. When he returned from exile, Lenin and others co-founded a newspaper, Iskra, and Lenin progressed his leadership role in revolutionary movement by arguing for a slick party leadership community that would manage a network of lower party organizations and their workers. Citizens began to vocalize their discontent which allowed Lenin’s call to be supported. The emperor issued his October Manifesto to appease his citizens, but Lenin was unsatisfied.
Sansom writes, “He faces his mortality and realizes the failure of constructing a life on preferences and abstract relationships” (421). Shallow relationships and a focus on outward appearance lead to a neglect of Ivan’s actual purpose. In this time of Ivan grappling with death, Tolstoy proposes the idea that before we die “the choice is not how to act in ways so that we can control our death and question the meaning of life, but whether there is a reality to which we can find real value as individuals that is not nullified by the existential syllogism” (Sansom 424). The control that he sought as a way to defend himself against chaos does not lead him to peace; instead, it disappoints him and helps move Ivan to a place of deeper understanding. At the very end during an interaction with his son, Ivan finally “empties himself of meaningless false images of human purpose, [and] he then sees how to respond honestly with integrity to his destiny” (Sansom 427).
Seton-Watson, a British Historian stated “He was a devoted husband and father, loved the country and wildlife, and was a good landlord. Of constitutional, social and economic problems, he understood little.” In the matter of demands for political freedom and equal rights, the Tsar turned a deaf ear to constant liberals. His belief that it was his right to have unlimited control over the Russian people was of more importance than the harsh lives of the Russian peasants which formed 70% of his subjects. His inability to understand the existing social conditions in Russia and needs of the lower social classes enhanced the Tsar’s ignorance towards issues that Russia was confronted with within the 20th century.
