Character Analysis Of Carol Matas In The Freak Series

The main character in “The Freak Series” by Carol Matas is Jade, who is fifteen years old and has recently discovered that she is a psychic. Through the series, Jade is haunted by visions and dreams of bombings in her local synagogue, innocent women murdered with their own scarves, and a small room with someone screaming. Jade tries to solve these mysteries for the her own good and the people she loves. She solves these problems with her exceptional traits such as having a quick reaction and a strong conscience. Jade has a quick reaction. She tends to react quickly to sudden hunches such as when she and her family went on a family trip in Far and she gets a sudden feeling that they should pull over. She tells her dad so, and with her father’s quick reflexes – I think she inherited it from him – they avoid an upcoming car. She is repulsed by evil, disgusted by the fact there is so much problems and danger in the world. In Freak, she states that “every time [she] thinks about it [she] feels sick” (Freak, p, 156). Jade was referring to the fact that someone would ever dare to plant a bomb in a children’s room, where innocent kids would be. A possibly empty kitchen would have been better, where the chances of anyone getting hurt is low. But since the bomb was not there, she is extremely revolted. Jade also says that she wishes there was a “plan that didn’t involve so much nasty” (Visions, p. 123). She had just been thinking about how she fits into the universe’s master plan, and how a murderer lashing out and killing people is a part of it.
