John is a character portrayed in Sinclair Ross’s short story “The Painted Door.” He is a middle-aged farmer who enjoys his time on the farm. Also, John has a “hulking body” (Ross 3), hardworking hands and a full beard during the winter. One of John's strengths is he is physically fit, which allows him to work in extreme conditions. In fact, with a storm brewing John decided to walk seventeen miles to check on his father in the bitter cold (Ross 5). From this, it can be inferred that John had the physique to walk in the snow or otherwise he would never have suggested checking on his father knowing he could not do it. As well as it was an altruistic act to put others before himself as family is an important value to him. In addition, as John …show more content…
John also did not let the fear of the cold stop him from giving his word despite being aware of the dangers of returning because he values family above anything else. Moreover, John is a determined man who is committed to the challenges he takes upon. One of John’s desires was to have a mortgage-free farm and to achieve it he “[slaved] away fifteen hours a day” (Ross 3). To work fifteen hours each day without giving one's body rest shows commitment as many people are not able to work a day without procrastinating. However, John did not let the exhaustion keep him from working toward his goals. John worked all day because his way of expressing love was acts of …show more content…
During the wintertime when the work was slow on the farm John would “[hurry] his food and [push] his chair away again, from habit from sheer working instinct” (Ross 4). Readers can understand from this that, while having the ability to take time off work, John has no idea what else to do. Moreover, him constantly living the same lifestyle even when he is not working has caused him to miss time when he might spend quality time with his wife and experience the world, which provides him with greater fulfillment. Also, through his lifestyle readers can view that John enjoys living his life in a simple manner as he is an introvert. In addition, John never talked much as well when Ann and John would go out “John never danced enjoyed himself” (Ross 4). This shows that John never enjoyed a social setting and for this reason he was never able to come to enjoy himself with his wife in a social setting. He also had difficulty communicating since he lived his life simply, according to his ideals and caring for his
John’s change was unexpected for his wife, she sees the change and accepts him for it. In the beginning John felt sorry for himself and believed nothing would get better in the matter of his sins and near the end he bettered himself for his wife and proved what he could
“This” was bamboo splinters under the nails. (McLean 353). In other words John invaded his father's privacy not respecting it at all. Finally, at the end of the story, Jonathan’s dad walked in on him searching through his boxes, he was hurt by his son's actions, when he walked into the shed and saw Jonathan looking through his stuff, “his eyes welled, and bright molten tears ran down his cheeks. Then he dropped the single key and walked away,” he then went outside and, “was sitting on the edge of the garden with his head down and eyes closed as if in prayer, his hands lying loose and unattached”(McLean 354-355).
It took him a week of intense, often sloppy, work from sun-up to sundown to finish planting his farm. After that, John took little care for his farm; he worked as a man in no hurry, and took breaks often, stopping to eat, or rest, or simply to stare into the distance, lost in thought, except for to apprehend the necessity of renewing his halfhearted efforts once more. More often than not, however, he spent hours idly resting in the shade of their cabin, or leisurely watching clouds drift through the cerulean
His ambition was so strong that no one, not a single soul knew what had happened, “he didn’t talk much. Even his wife I don’t think she knew the first damn thing about him … well, about any of it. The man just kept everything buried.” John never dealt with what happened. He buried it inside of him and never let it out.
John’s passion to pursue his dream was too strong, and it was becoming evident to his parents that he was no longer happy with his mundane life on a farm. Through years of conflict between William and his son, William reluctantly gave way and allowed his son to migrate to the city; he did this in belief that, if he himself could not live his dream, maybe he could live it through his

John’s father trust in his son is what led to the accomplishment. John’s father is a static character because he remained a priest in the end and didn’t develop because he was already a priest, unlike John. The theme of the story is curiosity and how it sometimes drives people to do the unthinkable. Sometimes all someone needs is a little motivation to push them to do what needs to be done.
John had a problem with fighting and petty thievery; he wasn’t what you would call a nice kid. He bullied the kids that were different and smaller in size. Soon later he found school just wasn’t for him and dropped out. He began to work at a machine shop, and worked hard at it. His problem though he liked to party and stay out all night.
There are gaps of leisure time between and after his work schedule, Music and conversation are a couple he claims to enjoy. It must be fair to conclude he left a number of leisure activities off of this example list, but to include those that he did; shows his appreciation and value of art and companionship as most should. At the end of his work day, he returns his belongings to their original spot, this could represent starting a clean slate the next day, with no leftover concerns. He also reflects on his doings, and questions himself again with “What good have I done to-day?” (Stanlick, Silver, 2004 p 36).
John has made vast changes in the way he considers himself towards others and how he values himself towards the other people in
John was a husband to a girl name Polly and a father of two. He had some complication back in Scotland and decided to move to Canada. As time pass by while he`s in Canada, difficult situations tend to appear. If I were to descried his personality, I would say he is irrational and manipulative. He tends to lie and seems like every decision he made backfires on him.
This made Ann keep her thoughts to herself, she can’t complain about John’s love and devotion because all John wanted is the best for Ann. Sinclair Ross used the setting to symbolizes what John and Ann’s marriage is, “in winter, with roads impassable...that from a five the distance was more trebled to seventeen” has a direct connection with their marriage because like the roads being impassable, John and Ann’s
