This theme is shown through Kevin, as he is tiny for his age, and has a physical disability, but is extremely intelligent. The author portrays this theme on page 54 by having Max say, “‘And anyhow it’s not fair how everybody always says ‘Poor Kevin’ just because he didn’t grow… You can ask him anything and he knows what it means.’” Max knows that even though Kevin is the size of a kindergartener, he is smart enough to be in college. Also, he knows that other people should never judge him on his looks, because on the inside he is so much more. Most people who meet Freak think he can not do anything because he is “disabled”. But, they are wrong, just as Max knows.

Archetypes in literature are often seen as courageous and selfless individuals. When no one else seems willing to go the distance or go that extra mile, they do. Aside from this, they are also seen as the underdog; when all odds are against them they persevere. A great example of this is seen in the “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: Lightning Thief” written by Rick Riordan. Percy, in the novel, is written as a troubled youth battling his own internal battles all while trying to find himself and coming to terms with the fact that he is different and will forever be different.
I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches, and called the rest: ‘All hands aboard; come, clear the beach and no one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home” (Homer 865). He was so determined to get home he dragged his men to the ship ad tied it down. Rapunzel (Disney’s Tangled) was determined to see the lanterns that her parents (little did she know) lit for her every year on her birthday. She always looked at them outside her window, but she never went to the village to see them. Now it’s her 18th birthday and she is determined to see them.
Beowulf and Anne of Green Gables are two heroes that show the same characteristics the only exception is they portray each of these characteristics quite differently. They both have traits like loyalty, perseverance, and anger that are very clearly shown to us. Anne is only a child so her view is very different from Beowulf’s. Anne tends to be highly imaginative, impulsive, and innocent compared to Beowulf, who lived in a time of male superiority where they liked a good fight and drinking. It is a very different mentality, but the traits of a hero never change.

Ever since Rosemary was little, her dad Joseph was always comparing her to her brother and since she was his first daughter but third child he expected her to be as intelligent as her siblings and she was pretty much looked upon by her father as a special needs child. Rosemary was not like normal people and was seen to be irregular just like the women in flatland. Also in flatland, the women were not aloud to go to school because they were thought of as not that smart enough to attend school. If you Diana Anderson Block 3 11/17/15 think about it, in flatland they are pretty much segregating/Discriminating against the women because they are different than the others. The main focus of connection with flatland was supposed to be between the women and Rosemary Kennedy and how they were both mistreated in a similar manner.
