Love as a sickness in Love in the Time of Cholera
Love in the Time of Cholera, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a novel that recounts the glorious and tragic side effects one goes through due to love. Marquez wrote the novel in such a way it left the reader wandering off into an alternate world. The use of magical realism plays a huge role in the novel, though Marquez always claimed that, “surrealism comes from the reality of Latin America,” (Marquez) and his intention was never for it to be categorized as magical realism. In this particular novel, he has used the profound motif of love. Throughout the novel, the indices show that the symptoms of both love and cholera are similar in many ways. Marquez’s main concept is that love is an illness, and illness so grave that it is compared to cholera, “The only regret I have is dying if it is not for love.” In the title itself the deadly plague is mentioned. The novel portrays the perturbing effect of the deadly, yet unavoidable, disease called love. The disease Florentino becomes plagued with is love, over the years, though, he has had many lovers. However, his love for Fermina is unrelenting and continues to flourish over time, despite her marriage with another man. Cholera plays a critical role in the novel, since Marquez often makes allusion to the horrendous, fast-acting effects of the deadly disease, otherwise synonymous with love.
