Academic writing refers to a style of expression that researches use to define the intellectual boundaries of their disciplines and their specific arrears of expertise. Features of academic writing include a precise word choose, a formal tone, a clear focus on their research problem under investigation. Like any other profession such as law, academic writing is designed to convey agreed meaning about complex ideas for a group of scholarly experts. (A) Critical thinking Academic writing addresses complex issues that require high order thinking skills. It is, in fact, this feature of writing that gives meaning to the written words. An error in punctuation can convey a completely different meaning to the one that is intended. For example: Your book, John. Your book, John? Although the sentences are the same, the two sentences mean completely different things because of the question mark and full stop. If punctuation is taken for granted then the message that was intended to transmitted to the ready will not serve its purpose. (C) Correct Grammar and spelling Grammar is the way in which words are put together to form a proper sentence therefore if not done correctly grammar might lead to poor communication. Correct spelling is an important part of literacy and English spelling can cause difficulties for both the native and non-native speakers of English, it is therefore important that both grammar and spellings are correct as this could lead to poor first impressions as well as lead to poor communication.
