Adventure tourism is an outdoor leisure activity that generally takes place in an unusual, exotic, remote or wilderness setting, sometimes involving some form of unconventional means of transportation and tending to be associated with low or high levels of physical activity.
Adventure Tourism ranges from non hazardous to high risk had led to the concept where adventure tourism can be catgorised as either ‘soft adventure’ or ‘Hard Adventure’. Soft adventure would involve very low risk and require any previous experience in their past holidays. However, hard adventure would require previous experience, recognised levels of competence, ability to cope with the unexpected and skills associated with type of holidays.

The motivations of adventure tourists are significant for tourism both as a category of human behaviour and as a global industry.

Who are adventure travelers? They are fairly evenly split male to female, even within in category of “hard” adventure sports. Soft adventurers skew slightly more female, but not as much as other types of travelers who are predominantly female.
