Authors around the world portray characters by using a set of techniques which are called characterization or character development. Details along the story, dialogues, flashbacks, conflicts and other elements help the audience understand more about the characters life, his or her actions, thoughts and other qualities. Characterization may be either direct or indirect. Direct characterization means that the narrator directly states the characters traits. On the other hand, indirect characterization is when the narrator reveals a characters personality by their thoughts, their behavior and feelings. Anton Chekov, the author of A Problem uses these character techniques along the plot of his story. In this story the main character Sasha Uskov is first portrayed as a problematic guy with a tough childhood. This man caused the conflict in this story because he cashed a false promissory note at a bank, and it had been due for payment three days before. This gives the …show more content…

He is Sasha’s uncle, the brother of his dead mother. The author uses direct characterization for this character, he states that he is a kind-hearted, gentle man. The audience can see this too by his dialogue, he talks to people with respect using gentle words and a smooth, mild tone to calm the situation. We can see that this is a loyal man too, since all he is trying to do is save his nephew from tough consequences. He puts family honor in front of civic honor. This kind man defends his nephew till the end, convincing the others to forgive him. He is compassionate and caring, wanting to show a helping hand to his nephew instead of punishing him. In the end of the story, after he convinces the family to forgive Sasha he walks out with him. He muttered edifying words into his nephew’s ear but he didn’t listen.
