Looking back on the past two months spent at my placement, so far, I have learned multiple things related to orthotics and prosthetics. When beginning my placement, I had the goal of expanding my knowledge and participating in a new type of learning. Within the time thus far, I feel that I have been meeting the expectations of my supervisor as well as myself. At my placement, I have gained very specific knowledge and skills required in the field. I am beginning to be able to apply this knowledge to more complex tasks and become a more active participant in the fabrication of different devices. At this point in my placement, I am in the process of working to achieve my learning objectives and continue to expand my learning. Thus far, I have been increasing my learning in progressing towards fully completing my learning objectives. My first learning objective aimed towards learning about specific medical conditions causing limitations and the specific devices that they required. My learning objective is to be able to describe five conditions and devices by the end of my placement and at this time I am able to successfully describe three conditions. My placement takes place in a hospital setting through Hamilton Health Sciences. In this environment there is multiple fabrications, modifications and repairs to different devices occurring on a regular basis. In this setting you are required to be creative, technical and work hands-on. This environment allows you to work with many different materials and equipment to be able to complete different devices. The environment requires you to work in a workshop setting where proper control and safe-usage of equipment is critical to avoid any workplace injuries. With an increase in technology, it is evident that you must always be willing to learn new methods and techniques. Since this is a health based placement you are continuously working towards helping patients to overcome their medical needs including but not limited to mobility issues, birth defects, illness and accidents. This setting is allowing me to generate new knowledge on a daily basis. It is evident that by striving to achieve my learning objectives my placement is constantly generating new knowledge. By being a kinesiology student, basic anatomy, physiology and biomechanics have helped me to create a base foundation for my learning. My parents brought their strong work ethic from Ghana, cultivated on their family’s farms, to Austin, Texas where it was critical in encouraging my own desire to work in close contact with a diverse population of patients. My experiences in the communities I’ve lived in and health care have provided me with the insight to work within both types of areas. My most prominent experiences in health care have come from working in clinics that serve underserved populations.

The individual may not have acquired loss of consciousness or only lose consciousness for no more than a few minutes. They may receive rehab and physio treatment that can correct their injury to improve their well-being. Moderate – The individual will lose consciousness for longer periods of time and may need longer to recover. Some symptoms may stay with the individual and they may not recover from them.
A few years ago, my aunt was diagnosed with diabetes and renal failure. Together, the two illnesses were crippling, forcing her into months of hospitalization. She eventually became wheelchair bound due to chronic weakness from multiple treatments and surgeries. Ultimately, she was admitted into a rehabilitation facility, where she began receiving occupational therapy services three hours a day, three days a week. After weeks of intense leg treatments, she regained her ability to stand and walk with relative ease.
Critical Reflection: Provider The site I observed at was Nazareth senior living center. The facility provides short term and long term care to older adults. The health care staff working at the facility includes: Nurses, social worker, dietitian, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist recreation therapist and a part time physician.
Becoming an Anesthesia Assistant would allow me to work as a healthcare professional, help people in their time of need, and have an increasingly dynamic career. I know that my attention to detail, creativity, and critical thinking capacity developed over years working in the medical field make me an ideal candidate for the Master’s of Medical Science in Anesthesiologist Assistant program at Emory University. The fact that learning never stops, that you work and collaborate with some of the smartest minds around, and the uniqueness of each patient gets me very eager to enroll in a challenging DPT program with proven student success. I am very thankful for the experience I’ve had so far observing physical therapy and studying the sciences in my undergrad. I don’t think as many other careers are so open to allow students into their workspace and I look forward to one day being able to spark another young student’s interest in rehab therapy. Ever since grade school, I was passionate about working in the field of medicine, and science. I enjoyed anatomy, medical spelling and terminology, and reading about the healthcare industry. Because of my passion for healthcare, I decided to to attend Health Sciences High. There, I was given the best opportunities, such as, medical internships and college health courses. My plans and goals had turned me into a mature young adult.
During my course with NSCC, where I am studying to become a Continuing Care Assistant. Each student is required to work in a continuing care facility alongside other health care providers for a month. I attended skills development placement at Harbour View Lodge located in Sheet Harbour. This placement has given me the opportunity to apply my knowledge, and skills that I have studied and practiced in the classroom. When entering the facility the first week I felt nervous and excited at the same time.
