Charles Perkins, born in Alice Springs 1936, was a controversial leader within the Aboriginal community. Perkins was known both for this willingness to fight for what he believed in, and his determination, although this confidence brought him into conflict with community leaders and the government. Perkins was involved in the ‘Freedom Ride’ travelling through rural New South Wales in the early 60’s. This ride was a significant contribution highlighting the predicament the Aboriginals faced. Being Aboriginal himself, this ride demonstrated that Aboriginal people could stand up for themselves. Charles Perkins: Early Years • Aboriginal activist and Aboriginal leader • Charles (Charlie) Perkins was born at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station Aboriginal Reserve in the Northern Territory in 1936. His parents were Arrente and Kalkadoon people. Removed from the Reserve at the age of 10 he was sent to a home for boys in Adelaide where he completed his schooling. • Between 1952 and 1957, Perkins worked as an apprentice fitter and turner for the British Tube Mills company in Adelaide • By the age of 21, Charles was one of the highest-paid soccer players in Adelaide. • Charles left Adelaide to pursue his soccer career in England.
Charles Perkins had a big impact on Australian history, specifically Aboriginal rights, through the post-war era. Perkins, born in 1936, spent his early childhood in a police-patrolled compound in Alice Springs. He was not part of the stolen generation within the sense that he was not forcibly removed from his mother, however, he did spend his childhood and adolescence away from his family. Perkins reported having an unhappy childhood, plagued by racial vilification and social alienation, and was generally being treated as an inferior citizen by his peers. This childhood motivated him to go to university and eventually facilitate other indigenous Australians to follow suit.

Vincent Lingiari, an Aboriginal Stockman and land rights leader, according to records, he was born in 1919, no date given. Vincent was the son of Gurindji parents, who were employed at a vestry-owned cattle station called Wave Hill owned by a British company, because Australia was apart of the commonwealth. At the age of 12, Vincent was absorbed into Wave Hill, to work at stock camps. As he grew older, he became a head stockman at the station, but at first, he wasn’t paid. His first time receiving and encountering the concept of money was in 1953, when he was lined up with his co-workers and received €5 for his work.
It wasn’t only the pools that they were forbidden to enter, they also weren’t allowed to enter the picture theatre, footy oval and RSL. Therefore, the Freedom Riders needed to help the Aboriginals to improve their rights. They did this by preventing anyone from entering by blocking the front entrance. After they protested, Charles Perkins discussed these problems with the police, pool managers and the local council. This was a success as the Council Law “That persons appearing to have Aboriginal blood be excluded from the bathe” was revoked.

It’s a day where communities across the nation come together in celebration, watch the glorious fireworks, and play a few rounds of backyard cricket on the blistering asphalt. But for many Indigenous Australians, January 26 does not represent this supposed ‘Australian Dream,’ but rather the recollection of a nightmare. Australia Day to them marks the beginning of a harrowing 229 years of slaughtering, criminalisation, and torture of thousands of their people.
Scott Sawyer’s opinion piece published in the Gladstone Observer on the 25th of January 2014, employs an informal tone to argue against the unnecessary racism often exhibited on Australia Day. The piece follows a train of thought as it transitions from an impartial positive tone to stern and disgusted. The article “Ditch the racism and enjoy Australia Day as it should be” states it’s contention in it’s title, clearly and concisely, continuing on to position the Australian population to agree to it’s contention using rhetorical questions, emotive and inclusive language and appeal to patriotism. Aboriginal leaders were one of the key and vital parts of the development of the Aboriginal Civil Rights Movement. Without those Aboriginals or anyone fighting for aboriginal rights wouldn't have had anyone to follow, anyone to inspire them to push for what was really right. The main points of this essay will be the impact that the leaders Charles Perkins, Paul Keating, Eddie Mabo and Kevin Rudd had on the aboriginal civil rights movement and how their involvement the Aboriginal civil rights movement wouldn't have made the same changes it did. In 1965 Charles Perkins who was the first Aboriginal to graduate from an Australian University led the Freedom Ride.

The ‘Bringing Them Home Report’ was a significant event for the civil rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as what they experienced between 1910 to 1970 was something no human being should have to go through, The Stolen Generations suffered a great deal of traumatic experiences. On 11 of May 1995 change, had to take place as this wasn’t a lifestyle a human being should live, the inquiry period began for The Bringing Them Home Report.
In fact, photographic portrayals of first nation peoples were not absent from the Boundary Commission’s archives. One photograph in particular showed aboriginal peoples bowing their heads looking as though they were mourning. This symbolizes and depicts first nations as a vanishing culture (Carol Payne 314). An aboriginal man named George Littlechild recontextualized historic photos taken by governmental and religious organizations of aboriginal people (Carol Payne 314/315). He was part of the ‘sixties scoop’, a group of aboriginal children who were taken from their birthplaces and placed in non-aboriginal foster families.

The Eureka Rebellion of 1854 was a time of significant social and economic change within colonial Australia. As people from around the world flocked to the Victorian goldfields for a chance of riches, the notion of equality and a multicultural society which defines contemporary Australia was born.
The constant booing and jeering of the crowds were what Stan Grant referred to as ‘’howls of humiliation’’. It was an unmistakable act of shaming and discrimination towards indigenous people; it was an implication that they are not meant to be a part of the great Australian Dream.
Charles Perkins played a major role in the Freedom Ride in order to shape Australian society from the 1960’s onwards. His key role in the Freedom Ride allowed him to successfully advocate for the desegregation of Australian institutions and towns as well as to reduce the amount of discrimination against Indigenous Australians. He endeavoured to make a change in Australian society, and wanted to expose the true nature of discrimination and segregation against Indigenous Australians. He wanted to gain the rights and freedom for his people, and effectively achieved those goals. Therefore, Charles Perkins did play a major role in the Freedom Ride from the 1960’s onwards, resulting in the improvement of Australian society.
