“Your killing me, killing me all I wanted was you” (Leto 4 ). This song quote by Jared Leto, embodies Charley’s emotions towards the loss of his mother. After the loss of his mother during his young adulthood, Charley begins to drink to show his suffering. Nothing could elucidate the reasoning why his mother is dead. “I left my family shortly thereafter--- or they left me” (Albom 5). Charley is in such deep sorrow that he lives under the earth for it is dark☺(Hyperbole). The death of Pauline, Charley’s mom, has such a vigorous impact on Charley that Charley’s family left him for lonesome. Charley’s wife and daughter leaving have a monumental impact on him later on. With no one around to help Charley through the death of his mother he gets drunk for the last time and tries to commit suicide. Growing up Charley is a daddy’s boy. His father said he had to choose him or his mother and could not be a mamas and daddy’s boy. While increasing by age Charley would play ball and wait around for his father at the liquor store. A letter whizz’s a path to Charley’s mailbox☺ (Onomatopoeia). It has been years since Charley has spoken to his daughter and he has lolled around not really having a care in the world, because he is always buzzed. When a letter arrives from his daughter he is enthusiastic☺(Metaphor). “But you, you're not allowed you're uninvited an unfortunate slight must be strangely exciting to watch the stoic squirm” (Morissette 8). The quote shows how Charley feels and the rage he has as he scans the letter to see they are just wedding pictures. He thinks should I have not been a mandatory person to be at my own daughters wedding? “And then, for the last time I got drunk” (Albom 11). This frightened him very much because he didn’t know where exactly he was supposed to shoot at. Also he didn't know where the people shooting at him were at. At one point Charley had to serve horse meat to his fellow soldiers because there were no cattle to slaughter for beef. Charley had to kill several horses that were meant to be used for war so the other soldiers could have some meat. Charley did not think that killing horses was something he would have to do when he joined the war.
The mother wept as she watched her son walk away into the fog. She knew the war would take his life, as it had her husband. During the American REvolution, times were hard for many colonial families. Families were torn apart, divided by their belief and choices. Generations clashed.
And Charley so wasnt down with that, but he had to. So he did, and that day was a terrible day for him.
Throughout the story, many of the characters experience the hardships of war in one way or another, whether it is a direct or secondhand impact. The maturity the boys develop throughout the novel demonstrates the way war can negatively impact one’s mental health.
The Civil War is seen as disastrous, upsetting, and a new start for America. In Across Five Aprils, written by Irene Hunt, she shows all of those feelings. The Civil War was a hard time for many families. Their son’s are going to war, they still have to work, and they need someone to protect the family. You worry for your safety, and your children’s.
Brides to be never got the chance to actually become brides ,mothers never saw their sons again while babies never met their fathers. Stephen Crane informs the reader the hardships of war through irony and sarcasm. In, “War is Kind” Stephen Crane wrote “Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind,”.. ”Do not weep, babe, for war is kind,” ..” Mother whose heart hung humble as a button On the bright splendid shroud of your son, Do not weep,” which shows the reader that fiancees/wives, mothers and children never got to see their loved ones again due to the hardships of the war.
What they do not look at: “Psychological effect of the war” War is something that has much more than physical effects. It is a burden on those involved on and off the battlefield. Being part of a war can affect you emotionally, mentally and physically. Even though soldiers are fighting for “just causes” was is an all-around negative event.
“Laura Wishart is dead.” (Silvey, P.230) This repeated phrase represents the human nature of sin and guilt. After dumping Laura’s body into the dam, Charlie constantly reminds himself that “Laura Wishart is dead.” Repetition of the phrase is shown after every major decision made by Charlie, linking his actions to the death of Laura Wishart.
The older man 's behavior contrasts with that of the persona who is young and has barely experienced life. Whereas the speaker is eager to discover life and have new experiences to escape her reality, the older man avoids his truth by focusing on mundane details of his experience in the Vietnam War. During his first battle Charley sees everyone around him dying, two bullets collide right in front of his face, a cannon ball taking off a man’s head and then going through an officer’s horse. After the battle, Charley finds that blood from dead bodies has tinted a nearby river pink. Charley even wet his pants in terror the second time he went to fight the Confederates. During his third battle, Charley runs at the Confederates, yelling for them all to die. After the battle Charley finds that his friend has been shot in the stomach, so Nelson asks Charley help him kill himself.

Have we ever realized that war can make people act strange? In the novella leaving Gilead, Pat Carr expresses how war can be deceiving. Geneva has given the name mother a whole different meaning. Mothers are a big part in our world, they help us go through hard times that life throws at us. It is better to lose a parent thru death than it is through emotional abandonment.
