Back in the day the U.S. was overrun by people called the Indians or Native Americans. One of the well-known Indians of the time was the Shawnee. The Shawnee were the traveling people of our little state of Ohio. They are also well-known from the Greenville treaty of the time. The Shawnee of the 17th century and mostly 18th century are the Indians people know.
2. Reciprocity The concept of reciprocity follows the guidelines of shared profit, and among the earliest Native Americans provided a system of exchange. The encounters between communities that involved reciprocity allowed a development in the lives of said communities that surpassed that of minimalist tribes. Reciprocity was an enduring idea, and remained crucial despite massive differences exhibited by native peoples over the course of time. Such trade benefitted all societies, enabling the simplistic exchange of goods and philosophies that aided in advancement for all Indians.
Stand Watie was born at Oothcaloga in the Cherokee Nation, Georgia on December 12, 1806. Stand Watie 's name in the Cherokee Nation was De gata ga, which means "he stands." To conclude, I will discuss the impacts European’s had on the Cherokee people’s progression into the 21st century using Goehring’s (1993) model of colonial impacts. The Cherokee People The Cherokee people have been around for years prior to European invasion and colonization. By the time of European contact, the Cherokee spoke multiple dialects and were spread over a vast area of land (Sturm, 2002, p. 30) As per Indians.org, the Cherokee people are a North American Indigenous group of Iroquoian descent. Originally from the Great Lakes region, a migration to the east coast had taken place. The tribes had lived in cabins and were in different sections.
When someone shares a personal experience or story with another person they normally grow closer because this establishes trust. Even though they grew up together, Magawisca must have trusted Everell a lot because this is most likely not a story she tells a lot of people. She was also taking a risk because he is European and therefore his views could have been the same as his parents when it came to the Native Americans. However, he was very open minded and cared about Magawisca’s story. According to Everell, Magawisca seemed “to embody nature’s best gifts, and her feelings to be the inspiration of heaven” (55).
The Cherokee Nation was a civilized and sophisticated culture that thrives for hundreds of years, prior to European settlement. The influence of the white man on the people became more prevalent as the years passed, and unfortunately, the Cherokee began to integrate their ways with the European settlers. The Cherokee began to assimilate to European religion, trade, livestock handling; and overall began to shift their entire culture around the white influence. However, in modern times it is possible to find a pure ‘bred’ and fully practicing Cherokee family- moreover, they are considered indigenous. Sarah Sargent in her article, Truth and Consequences: Law, Myth and Metaphor in American Indian Contested Adoption, reveals the myths and truths
After reading the Cherokee origin myth it demonstrates that they value the four directions, North, South, East, and West. In the story the directions are named “sacred”, showing that they must have a great deal of importance to the people. The directions were also used to divide the barren land at the beginning of the myth. Without the directions people would have had no way of knowing where they were or where they were going. The directions assisted people in their travels as well.
To become strong, people would have to learn how to become one and work together. Throughout the United States, there is a group of American Indians called Chippewa and they are a unique group of American Indians and they hold a unique story behind them. The Chippewa tribe was one of the original group from the time of development in the New World ("Chippewa Indians." Ohio). The tribe of Indians is very large, but now they are scattered throughout the United States.
The Cherokee Indians The Cherokee are a tribe consisting of native americans. They were located by the mountanious souths where a complex river system reached the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf Of Mexico, and Mississipi Basin, in the present day the were located in small portions of georgia, tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama, Virginia and West Virginia. The Cherokee developed extensive relations with many indeginous people and the United States. The Cherokee 's economic conditions were good, they traded with other tribes and with the U.S. Over time a conflict came up which was that Georgia wanted to remove the Cherokees from their land. A lot of preassure from congress saying the Cherokees would not be protected made part of
The Powhatan lived in the Virginia territory. The area that they lived in was called Tsenacommacah. Each of the tribes in the Powhatan nation had their own Weroance also know as chief; but had also paid their tribute to Powhatan. They interacted and intermingled with the Jamestown colonists, thus some of the Powhatan descendants still live in Virginia today. Other Powhatans were driven north and started a new life in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
When the colonies were being established in the United States, there were struggles between white colonists and the Native Americans already living there. Mary Musgrove helped this improve this situation when Georgia was being founded in the seventeenth century. Her blended background gave her skills that helped her bridge both groups. Born in 1700 in South Carolina, Mary Musgrove 's original name was Cousaponakeesa. Her father was white and worked as a trader.
