The 1961 blackhawks were one of the few Blackhawk teams that have won the Stanley Cup but may be considered the best. This team had many great aspects to winning the Stanley Cup that year but there were three that really stood out especially during the playoffs. These players were Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, and Bill Hay. These players each had 50+ points during that season. After this team won that Stanley Cup it was thought that it was going to be the start to a new era of Chicago hockey. but there backrounds are even more interesting. Bobby Hull was born January 3, 1939. He always had a great passion for hockey and was on a organized team by age 12. he loved the sport and was always known by his lightning slapshot. Bobby Hull was all around a fantastic player and knew he wanted to go pro. Hull joined the Chicago Blackhawks in 1957. this would be the start to a phenomenal career in the National Hockey League or the NHL. Bobby Hull would lead his team to a Stanley Cup championship and then later join the Winnipeg Jets. After many years of fighting with Chicago Blackhawks, Bobby Hull signed a 1 million dollar contract to be player/coach with the Winnipeg Jets in the upstart World Hockey Association in 1972. Hull’s signing gave him credibility to the WHA, and Hull lived up to his end of the bargain by leading the Jets to three Avco Cup championships and claiming two MVP awards. Hull returned to the NHL after four WHA teams joined the NHL in 1979, splitting the year between Winnipeg and the Hartford Whalers before announcing his retirement. He finished his career with NHL totals of 610 goals and 1,170 points, and another 303 goals and 638 points in the WHA.(Hull, 2014) In 1983, Bobby Hull was inducted to the hockey hall of fame and had his number retired from the chicago Blackhawks. Stan Mikita was born on may 20, 1940 in Slovakia. What a lot of people don’t know though is that his real name is Stanislaus Guoth. After living in Slovakia for eight years, Mikita emigrated from slovakia to Ontario, Canada because of the communist control in Slovakia. Mikita went with his Aunt and uncle. After three starring junior seasons with the St. Catharines Teepees of the Ontario Hockey Association, Mikita was promoted to the parent Chicago Black Hawks in 1959. In his second full year, in 1961, the Hawks won their third Stanley Cup. The young centre led the entire league in goals during the playoffs, scoring a total of six. (Mikita 2014) After winning the Stanley cup, the following year was known Mikita’s breakout year where he would go on to become the most feared center of the sixties. Stan Mikita would also go on to win many awards. These awards must be truely earned and takes dedication and skill. These awards are the Hart Memorial trophy, the Art Ross trophy, the Lady Byng Memorial trophy, Lester Patrick trophy, and then was inducted into the hall of fame in 2002. Mikita wasn't always a "nice" player. Actually, Mikita was one of the most penalized players of his time but later changed after returning home form a road trip with his family.
